Script Writing Assigment Handout

For the next 6 weeks we will be working on script writing. You will be creating a 3 -8 minute script that is an alternative ending, additional scene, or adaptation of a scene from Romeo & Juliet (William Shakespeare), Raisin in the Sun (Lorraine Hansberry), Our Town (Thorton Wilder), and Death of a Salesman (Arthur Miller). You will be required to read at least one of the plays and then join a group for one via the Ning. There should be no more than five students per group; if a group already has five members, you must select a different play. You may want to consider signing up for a group before you read to cut down on your work.

Once in your group, you should begin to discuss ideas for which option you want to do and possible ideas to include. The Ning will be your base for all future discussions both on and off the Ning. If you use class time to discuss something you post a summary on the Ning as well. I will using the Ning to monitor your contribution. If you do not post it, you will not get credit.

If you choose to an additional scene or alternative ending, you must make sure that settings, dialogue, and characters stay true to the play. If you choose to adapt a scene you must keep the same characters but should change one or more element such as dialogue or setting. If you have an additional idea that does not follow into these categories, come talk to me and we can discuss how to make it work. You will have time in the Media Center to research how events/culture shaped the author, setting, and characters. This assignment should be enjoyable so be creative and have fun!

Once scripts are written, you will also be filming it as well. Each team member must have a role in the production such as acting, filming or props. In order to get full credit, make sure that you mention both on the script and at the end of the film what roles each person did. At the end of the lesson you will share your film with the class. Both the film and script should be turned into me at the end.

You will also be asked to complete evaluations of both your team (including yourself) and the lesson as a whole. For peer evaluations you should write a half page assessment for each member and state what grade you would give each member. I will also give you some questions that you should answer for an evaluation on the plan.

The quality of the film, acting, and props will have a small factor into the grade. However, the majority of your grade will come from the script and teamwork. Please consult grading rubric to see how grades will be calculated.
