Tips for Reading and Book Lists

FIVE FINGER RULE

Choosing the right book at the right level

1. Pick a book of interest.

2. Open the book to the middle to a page with no pictures.

3. Read the book aloud (preferably to someone else).

4. Hold up one finger for every word that you do not know the meaning of or that you have a great deal of difficulty pronouncing.

Results:

0 FINGERS = the book is TOO EASY!! Put it back!

1 -2 FINGERS = the book is at the INTEREST level

3-4 FINGERS = the book is at the CHALLENGE level and should be read with an adult.

5 or more FINGERS = the book is at the FRUSTRATION level and should be put back.
