The following activities, which are appropriate for and may be of interest to some gifted student, are administered separately from the GATE Program. All qualified students are eligible to apply.

The Blue Ridge Environmental Studies Regional Summer Governor's School for the gifted provides its students with two weeks of stimulating and challenging learning experiences in the area of field biology and ecology planned and delivered by highly qualified instructors committed to an interdisciplinary curriculum approach. This academically rigorous program is designed to serve gifted students currently enrolled in grades 5 through 8 from Clarke, Frederick, Page, Shenandoah and Warren counties. Recognizing that appropriate academic programs for gifted children must address needs unique to the cognitive and affective characteristics of the gifted, the Blue Ridge Environmental Studies program provides opportunities for intellectually gifted children to work:

  • with their intellectual peers;
  • on real problems in the area of environmental management;
  • in an atmosphere of intellectual freedom and critical inquiry;
  • and at a level of intellectual expectation and depth of inquiry not generally attainable in the regular classroom.

Dates: June 18 - July 2, 2008

Times: 9:30 am - 2:30 pm

Cost: There is no tuition cost for students.

Transportation: Transportation is provided by local school division and is available from pre-established stops in each county.

 

Destination ImagiNation(DI) - www.destinationimagination.org

Destination ImagiNation is an international organization for kindergarten through college students teaching them life skills and expanding their imaginations through team-based creative problem solving. DI is not restricted to gifted students.

Team managers (coaches) are needed for the teams at the schools. Students compete at the school level for a space on the team. The team then works together to solve a challenge of their choice. This year's regional Tournament will be held on March 1, 2008 at Culpeper Middle School, VA. (Snow date: March 8, 2008) The state tournament is scheduled for April 5, 2008 at Western Albemarle High School in Charlottesville. The Global Finals is scheduled for May 21 - 24, 2008 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN.

A Team Manager training will be held on November 3, 2007.

Performing and Visual Arts Northwest (PAVAN)

Shenandoah County students with high performance capabilities and strong interest in the area of the visual and performing arts have access to PAVAN, the regional arts program. PAVAN activities are available during the academic year through the schools and during the summer through regional arts workshops. Transportation is provided from each campus for summer arts workshops.

Summer 2008 PAVAN Schedule

  • PAVAN Summer Regional Governor's School: July 7 - 18, 2008 at local high schools.
  • Arts Expedition! - For rising 4th through 6th graders. Camp 1 - June 23 - June 27, 2008 from 9:00 - 3:20 P.M. Camp 2 - July 28 - Aug. 1, 2008 from 9:00 - 3:20 P.M. (Locations are listed on the application.) Cost is $175 for the 10-day program.
  • Artists in Bloom Day Camp - For rising 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students July 21 - July 25, 2008 from 8:30 - 12:00 Noon. Tuition $100.
  • The Arts Alive Workshops are a series of evening and Saturday workshops offered for rising 6th - 8th grade students and for rising 9th - 12th grade students in such disciplines as the Visual Arts, Instrumental Jazz Band, Dance, Sign Language, Guitar, and Theater.Students may enroll in one workshop or several workshops. Locations for these workshops will be at various public schools in the participating counties.

    The cost for evening workshops is $90.00 with Saturday workshops $40.00.
