FAQ

Here are some questions I was asked and asked other people before the ride

Did you get travel insurance? - Yes, through World Nomads - it was affordable and easy to secure online.  3 months cost me $206.  The website is www.worldnomads.com

What's the story with Vietnam Visa's? - I got my Visa at the Vietnam Embassy in Nanning and it cost me 480Y.  The Visa is a 30 day single entry Visa (I'll get another one for my return leg)  and it cost 380Y but I paid an additional 100Y for the overnight service.  I needed one passport photo.

What's the story with Laos Visa's? - I was able to get a 60 days Laos Visa from my hotel in Hanoi.  It cost me $41 USD and took 2 days.  I didn't need a passport photo

Do you use an MP3 Player when riding. Batteries or Recharge? - You need an MP3 player if you're going alone - simply for sanity's sake.  I was fine with a re-charge as I was staying in Hotels/Guest Houses every night.  This goes the same for cameras.  When riding you need your ears to listen for traffic - you can't use your MP3 player when riding.

How did you take water? - A camelbak or similar system is a MUST.  Simply a MUST.  If you don't have one, buy one. I drank at least 3 litres per day.

Would you recommend the 'Mekong Delta' Lonely Planet Guidebook or taking a seperate LP Guide for each country?  This is a good question and did come up as in issue during the ride.  My Guidebook (look in gear list) was adequate but it was really just a brief overview of the major cities in the Mekong Delta area and left a lot to be desired.  If you are spending a longer amount of time in one area - or are particularly interested in one country's culture and history (ie Vietnam and War history), takinng a seperate Guidebook, or at least researching through a seperate Guidebook is a good idea.

Will update this page with more questions as the trip continues...
