If you are interested in undertaking a Masters by Research Project or a PhD Project under my supervision, then please write to me at: scott.heyes[at]canberra.edu.au. Details of the graduate program in the Faculty of Arts and Design at the University of Canberra are available here: http://www.canberra.edu.au/faculties/arts-design/research/students Below is a description of Master's projects I have supervised on issues involving indigenous communities Budj Bim Interpretive Centre & Eco-Resort Study (2009) Three students, Allison Stout, Jessica Black and Angelique Brett conducted research on interpretive design centres and eco-resorts that have been built within indigenous homelands. Subsequent to this research, they developed separate design options for a proposed eco- resort at Mt Eccles, Victoria. The students worked with the indigenous people from the Mt Eccles area, the Gundjitmara, as part of the design process. Indigenous Fijian Conceptions of Space (2009) Two master of architecture students, Elin Persson and Anna Sundman conducted research on notions of space in Fiji under my supervion. Through fieldwork and literature reviews, the students explored patterns of movement in Fijian communities with respect to peformance spaces as well as how small island communities are spatially configured. Since completing their research projects, Elin and Anna have initiated and constructed two design projects at Caqalai, Fiji. Living on the Island for several months, they designed and built an eco-friendly waste recycling facility and toilet facility from local materials. Local builders assisted in the construction. They received a grant from the Women of the Earth to support their initiative. In 2008, I supervised two Master of Architecture students whose research projects explored the geopolitics and design of informal settlements. Informal Settlements (2008) With respect to India, Leeanne Marshall produced a paper titled “Managing Informal settlements: The importance of comprehensive and integrated strategies that address rapid urbanization in the developing world. Bryan Cush generated a paper titled: “Camps or Settlements? A Comparison and Contrast of two African Refugee Camps.” |
