Kangiqsualujjuaq (George River)

Typical view of land near Kangiqsualujjuaq

I have been conducting ethnographic fieldwork in Nunavik (Northern Quebec) for nearly a decade, particularly in Kangiqsualujjuaq (pop. 750). This Inuit village is located on the eastern coastline of Ungava Bay and is situated on the banks of the George River.

The projects that have been undertaken with the participation of the Inuit community include:
  • Sea ice nomenclature project
  • Landscape cognition and perception project
  • Inuit knowledge and transmission project
  • Protected areas and traditional land management techniques
  • Storytelling project (see animation of proposed interpretive centre; see description here)
Mushing is becoming popular again in Kangiqsualujjuaq. Watch mushing here.

Arctic Char, an Inuit staple, is present in many rivers and lakes around Kangiqsualujjuaq.
