Light

The light unit taught during 7th grade is a short 4 week unit that covers topics from the electromagnetic spectrum to mixing colors of light to reflection and refraction.  If you have "tested out" of the regular curriculum, you will be working instead on one of the following projects.  Remember, you are also required to turn in a compacting log and sign a contract before you start.

School Physics Quiz: Light

Why is the Sky Blue?

Chances are you've wondered why the sky is blue at some point.  You may also have wondered how light causes objects to appear any color.  This is your chance to find out!  For this project, you are asked to put together a broshure explaining how light makes objects and things like the sky appear certain colors.  You're brochure should be written for a late elementary or early middle school student.

Renewable Energy

Photovoltaic Cells (Solar Cells) can be used to power houses or buildings.  Should everyone be using these cells?  What about businesses?  What about schools?  What about personal homes?  With the need to rely more and more on renewable energy, it is important that people are educated about their energy options.  Put together a brochure to sell the idea that schools should be using photovoltaic cells to (at least) help power their buildings.  You'd most likely include information like the definitions of a photovoltaic cell, the uses and benefits of using these cells.  Schools are faced with many budgeting concerns.  How would you convince a school that using solar energy would be financially beneficial?  To help you, think about this question: What do you think it would take to convince Champaign Schools to use renewable energy options like solar cells?
