10/22/07:  Will You Listen?

10/22/07: Will You Listen

We have a busy week ahead of us, but we've got great things coming up. Voices from Darfur is on Thursday the 25th at 7pm in the Ferguson Center Theater. We are really excited about bringing this speaker to the university and we hope to have a great turnout for the presentation. I'm nervous to try speaking to a refugee from Darfur, but I just hope I can keep my voice from shaking!
Also in the news is that our most adorable event ever, the Pup-kin Patch, has been moved due to weather, to Wednesday the 31st, Halloween Day. We will be in front of B.B. Comer with our co-sponsor, Friends for Homeless Animals, from 10am-4pm with adorable puppies to be played with for a 1.00 donation.  We'll also have Halloween cookies and puppy treats and goodness knows what else! We hope to catch some puppy-loving lunch-goers all day and raise plenty of money for Awere.

We hope to see plenty of you there and plenty of your dollars! Keep an eye out for our advertisements, and also check out our facebook and members page for photos you can post to advertise for Voices or the Pup-kin Patch. Thanks again for all your support!

Sincerely,
Genevieve Turkett
Vice President [and awesome webmaster]

10/10/07:  The Sweet Taste of Success

Facepainting on the quad went swimmingly. In addition to charging $1.00 per cheek for painting, we also sold our BAMA bracelets for $3.00 and hemp necklaces by Lindsey for $10.00. We made $500! I think this is just the beginning of what's to come. I think for our first venture into fundraising-land this semester, we're kicking butt. And there's only more where that came from!
We still have places left to go people.  We have decided to do facepainting for all of the home games left this semester. THen we have Support the Underdog on the 24th and Voices from Darfur on the 25th. Everyone be sure to check here and the Schools4Schools site often- and register on the s4s site if you haven't already. Being a team here  is incredibly important, so work together, communicate, and always offer to help when you can. Let's go!

Sincerely,
Genevieve Turkett
Vice President

10/02/07: Apwonjo Takes on the Quad!

So this coming Saturday, October 6th, is Homecoming weekend. We're taking advantage of a big gameday crowd [as if there isn't one every home game] and having a kid's craft table on the Quad. We'll be making crafts with the kids and facepainting! Our event committee is going out this week to recruit businesses to donate items for the crafts, like paint, paintbrushes, beans and paper plates for the shakers. This is your first big chance to come out and support Apwonjo! Our table will be on the Quad from 8am-12 pm and will be raising money for our Schools 4 Schools program. Please come out and support us, and bring your friends and family!

Members: We will be meeting Friday night to make bracelets, from 4pm- whenever we finish. Please try to attend, even if it isn't till 8pm. We will be at Gribbin House next to Canterbury Chapel on the corner of 5th St and Hackberry. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Genevieve Turkett
Vice President

Fresh Start 8/21

Allright everyone, we're back from summer, it's hot as the blazes, and I'm in the mood for some good, old-fashioned, Africa-savin'.

Sunday night Lindsey Mullen [President] and I had a booth at the night street fair and raised a lot of interest in our little program here, and we're excited about the potential new faces we could get this year. Our first meeting hasn't been scheduled yet, but we'll be sending out e-mails soon and starting to plan our first event!

As far as a Schools4Schools update, we reached our goal last year of $10,000 to help build Awere, and we at Apwonjo could not be more proud. It took lots of hard work, and lots of last-minute additions to the change jar, but low and behold we managed to pull it all together in the end. Receiving the Caritas Award and the $2000 in grant money put us over the mark to make the difference we wanted.

There's a ton more news, so head over to Our Success page and check out everything else we have planned this year for Schools4Schools! Thank you so much everyone!

 Sincerely,

Genevieve Turkett
Vice President
