By MICHAEL WEST Associate Editor of The Lion's Tale Senior Christina Bourn and sophomore Laura Weyers await their turn in a relay. Photo by Fred Toulmin After a long summer break, the swim team is back in the pool with nearly twice as many members as last year. There are currently 40 members, up from last year’s 22, making Turner the second largest team in CFBISD. “[The new swimmers] are doing great,” said veteran coach Amy Weltman. “By swim season time we should be ready to swim.” The first meet was on Oct. 6, which left only a month for the swimmers to train. “I don’t foresee any problem [with them]. We’ve got everybody that’s willing to work, and listen, and do what they’re supposed to do.” The swim team practices every day during seventh period at the natatorium. While the new team may be getting some attention from its size, previous members are still the ticket to district and state competition. Ms. Weltman mentioned John Gordon, a senior diver, who, she said, “has a really big chance to make it to state.” For boys relay, she pointed out Keaton Hollingsworth and senior John Gordon. Jonathan Cotten, a sophomore diver, said that the two teams to watch out for at state and district competition are Highland Park and Newman Smith. Highland Park holds the record for nine consecutive state titles in UIL. The team is always looking for new members for next year. Cotten, who joined his freshman year, joined the swim team because he wanted to dive. Laura Weyers, who also joined her freshman year, recommended that any new swimmers “listen to coach Amy. Do not make her angry. She’s really awesome unless you make her angry; then she’ll make you run stairs.” |
