Yoga Club Aims to Provide Relaxation, Balance of Mind and Body
By SHELBY STEVENS Associate Editor of The Lion's Tale The Yoga Club at has been gone for almost two years, but now it is back in action. "I haven't been able to have Yoga Club since I had an eighth period last year. Two years ago we met in F-Hall. I would love to start it up again, but I would need to find a core group of students (two to three) to take leadership roles," Mr. Gary Williams said. The two students who made it happen are junior Kelly Vahary and senior Hannah Courson. The word Yoga means "union," in Sanskrit, an old language spoken in India, and can be thought of as the union between mind, body, and spirit. Many people may see Yoga as stretching and getting into weird poses and positions, but really Yoga is about developing strength and flexibility to help create balance in the body. The majority of Yoga classes practice not only the poses, but they also practice meditation. They also have instruction on breathing, call and response chanting, or even an inspirational reading from the teacher. Anyone can find a Yoga class that suits them because Yoga helps with spiritual exploration, and it is also used as a low-impact workout that makes the practitioner feel happy and energized. "The club will be meeting once a week starting Thursday, Sept. 24, in upstairs D-hall with warmups and breathing exercises at 2:45 p.m., then moving on to meditation, stretching, and poses at 3 p.m. in room E-202 (DMC)," said Hannah. Also, be sure to bring a yoga mat and wear clothes that will not interfere with the stretches and poses and don't fret about flexibility or strength. "This club is about relaxation, and everyone needs some time to relax after a long day at school. We are trying to bring that relaxation to them," Kelly said. |
