Assistant Principal Cherney Steps Up To The Plate As New Associate Principal
By KAREN TRAN Editor of The Lion's Tale
Determined to step up, exhausted from the interviews in September, Ms. Stephanie Cherney, assistant principal of the Freshman Class, moved smoothly into her new position as the school’s associate principal. Ms. Cherney mentioned that although her recent switch in authority does not feel different, she realizes that her new role at Turner demands that she continue “working with instruction, curriculum, data, and increase student achievement.” She will also continue to “constantly gather voices” and do whatever she can to help Turner to be a better place. One of the minor differences between her old job and new job is that as associate principal she “looks at the big picture,” which is also what new the principal, Ms. Georgeanne Warnock, does. “We’re not that different, and we’re all striving to be instructional leaders,” said Ms. Cherney. Ms. Cherney and Ms. Warnock are working together to build the school into a better community. Ms. Cherney believes that Ms. Warnock’s vision for the school will will guide her team through the dust and move the school forward. “When I think about what I want for [my children] when they are teenagers and about to graduate from high school, I want them to be happy, healthy, and have every possible opportunity that the world has to offer at their choosing. Ms. Warnock voiced similar concerns: “When I think about the students here at RLT, I think about them in the same way — I want every student who walks through the doors of this school to be happy and healthy and to graduate in four years ready to take on the world — whether it be going to university, technical school, military service, or into the work force. “I want our students to be equipped with the tools they need to be competitive in a 21st century global economy. And I want everyone to know the great things that are happening at RLT and how wonderful the students are who attend our school,” said Ms. Warnock. Ms. Cherney, also a mother, agreed with this; she wants the students and Turner and her child to get the same, equal opportunities to lead a successful, happy life. Coming from a small person who has a big voice, Ms. Cherney’s compassion and spirit are definitely shown from her thoughts and actions. Ms. Cherney “[wants] every child to have an advocate, to be greeted with a smile, dignity, and respect; [she’s] interested in their success.” Although Ms. Cherney worked at Newman Smith High school for nine years, she considers Turner her home. “Kids at Turner are the best kids,” Ms. Cherney said. “They understand, have character, know how to care, and together create a unique community.” She mentioned that the people at Turner are the reason why she comes to school everyday, to see everyone’s bright faces and to hear their vibrant voices. She also added that she’s excited about her new position and the things she can’t wait to do with Turner students and faculty. Although even with the switch in positions, there’s one other thing that won’t change about her role at Turner. She’s always here to motivate the students with her special, magical words, “And remember, character counts!”
