Wanted: WOMEN AS MUSES to 7th Grade City School Girls. A Muse inspires girls by recognizing and drawing out girls’ strength and potential. Qualities of a successful Muse include (if you decide to join us): • opening your heart and mind to the girls you work with, without judgment or pre-conceived notions; • a willingness to acknowledge you don’t have it all together; • courage to empower girls and help them use their voice. Five core skills for Muses are: (1) appreciating differences; (2) stepping in and stepping aside depending on the needs of the group; (3) self-awareness; (4) observing and listening carefully; and (5) curiosity, being comfortable with the unknown, and moving the focus away from yourself and what you know and want for girls toward what girls know and want for themselves. • Muses will work in pairs facilitating a Girls’ Circle of about 6-8 girls for nine sessions at the girls’ middle school in follow-up to Girls’ Day Out.
Commitment: Attend the Third Annual Girls’ Day Out: ‘The Power in Me' at the Glen Sanders Mansion on November 15th. One hundred and fifty City School 7th grade girls will attend. This day for girls begins with an opening keynote, two workshops (of their choice) in the morning on building skills in relationships, luncheon, an afternoon workshop in the arts (of their choice), and a finale sharing their self-expression (whether art, dance, poetry, etc.) with the rest of the group. You would be assigned to a table of 10 girls with whom you would sit during lunch and the final sharing session that day. You would be welcome to attend the entire day but are only needed for lunch to meet the girls (the afternoon is optional, if you can make it). This program is being hosted by the Schenectady County Working Group on Girls, a partnership of women representing AAUW, Boys & Girls Clubs, Girls Inc., Girl Scouts, Junior League, LWV, NYSUT, PFLAG, Sexual Assault Support Services, Safe Inc., Schenectady City School District, Schenectady County Public Library, Schenectady Federation of Teachers, YWCA and others.
Prior to this day, there are three evenings of training for the Muses: October 20, from 6-9pm, October 27 from 6-8:30pm and November 10 from 6-8pm. These are essential to attend.
We have created the Girls’ Circles in order to provide follow-up to our November program, build girls’ self esteem and connections with their community. There will be nine one-hour Girls’ Circles at which you and your co-leader would meet with your girls at their middle school (during their lunch break or 3pm-4pm) on dates of your choosing (in collaboration with the school clinicians) for December through April. You will be given a curriculum supporting our goal of helping the girls feel valued, gain information that enables them to act positively on their behalf in their relationships, and become empowered to express themselves and fulfill their goals.
If you would like to join us for this exciting endeavor, please contact Joanne Tobiessen at jtobiessen@hotmail.com and put Muse in the subject line! Thank you for your interest. |
