Promoting Adolescent Achievement through Disciplinary Literacy and Learning
The mission of the South Carolina Center of Excellence for Adolescent
Literacy and Learning at Clemson University is to improve adolescent disciplinary
literacy and learning, and thereby adolescent achievement.
Three principles guide our work:
- Content determines process: the discipline from which
the content is drawn determines the cognitive and literacy processes inherent
in learning in that discipline.
- Learners must be actively involved in constructing
their knowledge but require support from more knowledgeable others to do so.
- Disciplinary principles and practices grounded in the
learning cycle guide and inform instruction.
Our goals include:
- Improve students’ disciplinary learning and achievement by improving content area teaching and learning.
- Expand the professional roles of teachers.
- Build
capacity to improve teaching and learning in schools and districts
through the development of Teaching Consultants in the content areas of
English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
