Promoting Adolescent Achievement through Disciplinary Literacy and Learning

The mission of the South Carolina Center of Excellence for Adolescent Literacy and Learning at Clemson University

is to improve adolescent disciplinary literacy and learning, and thereby adolescent achievement.

Three principles guide our work:

• • Content determines process: the discipline from which the content is drawn determines the cognitive and literacy processes inherent in learning in that discipline.

  • Learners must be actively involved in constructing their knowledge but require support from more knowledgeable others to do so.

  • Disciplinary principles and practices grounded in the learning cycle guide and inform instruction.
