First Quarter

Math
Numbers------

  • Counting to 10
  • Counting objects to 10
  • Recognizing numbers 1-10
  • Writing numbers 1-10

(If your child is familiar with 1-10, we will move on to 1-20, 1-30, etc.)

 

Sorting------

  • sorting a group of objects by shape ex. Putting all the circles together, all the rectangles together, all the triangles together
  • sorting a group of objects by color ex. Putting all the red bears together, all the blue bears together, all the green bears together
  • sorting a group of objects by kind ex. Putting all the spoons together, all the forks together

Directional/Positional Vocabulary------

  • Using positional words to describe where something is

 

in     beside       above       under        behind       in front of  on

 

ex. The clock is above the door.

      The paper is on the desk.

      The block is under the chair.

 

  • Modeling an action when given directions

 

ex. Put the bear in the box.

      Put the bear in front of the box.

      Put the bear beside the box.

 

Patterns------

  • Creating and extending an AB pattern with actions, words and objects

 

ex. A child can make an AB pattern with silverware    fork, spoon, fork, spoon

                                        with crayons       red, blue, red, blue

                                        with their body      sit, stand, sit, stand, 

                                        with their hands     clap, snap, clap, snap

 

Writing

 

Products------

  • Uses words to express needs and wants
  • Name common objects ex. desk, table, etc.
  • Responds appropriately to questions

  • Uses drawings or symbols to convey idea or information

This is a very important stage of writing, we will concentrate on developing pictures that help express their ideas and that show details.

 

 

  • Uses random letters

Students typically are not writing words right now. However this quarter, you should begin to see your child use random letters to represent some writing on their paper.

 

  • Writes own first name

Your child’s name should be written with a capital letter at the beginning and the rest need to be lower case.

 

Grammar and Language Conventions------

  • Uses upper and lower case letters interchangeably

Students writing may be a mix of upper case and lowercase letters at this time.

 

 
Reading

 
Word Study
  • Recognizes words that rhyme   ex. cat, hat---yes   cat, bag---no
  • Can name upper and lower case letters of the alphabet 

 

Alphabet Knowledge 
  • Recognizes own name by sight
  • Recognizes environmental print such as signs, labels and trademarks (stop signs, Mc Donald’s, Walmart, Food Lion, etc.)
 
Print Concepts 
  • Knows the front of the book
  • Back of the book
  • Can point to the title
  • Can demonstrate directionality (left to right) by pointing with their finger
  • Demonstrates where to begin reading the story
  • Points to a single letter in a page of text
  • Points to the first word in a page of text

 

Comprehension

  • Predicts possible events before reading
  • Chooses to read and look at different kinds of books and selections (ex. storybooks, nursery rhymes, poems, etc.)
  • Understands and follows spoken and/or picture directions

 

Connections

  • Listens to stories
  • Goes back to stories read or heard to reread or enjoy

 

Developing Reading Habits

  • Interacts for at least 5 minutes daily with self-selected texts
