SCA Summer Program Complete
SCA Houston has had another sucessful summer! Two crews in the field for 6 weeks, accomplishing a lot of great projects and finishing the summer off with a camping trip to Enchanted Rock State Park and a fun Graduation party! Thanks everyone for the great summer!

SCA Summer Program in Full Swing!
SCA Houston's Summer Crews have now been out in the field for almost a week, working hard at improving local parks! Keep an eye out for the yellow hard hats if you are visiting Houston's green spaces!

Applications (still open!) and Try Out Day
We are still accepting applications for the Summer Crews, so apply as soon as possible! I've extended the deadline by a week or so, so this will be the last chance to apply! Do it quickly!
If you have applied, contact Andy Janes (see below) to find out about our Try Out Day on May 1st from 12:30 PM - 4:00 PM at Jackson Cemetery. You need to have a signed waiver from SCA and wear closed toed shoes and long pants.

SCA Houston's 2011 Summer Program is a paid summer job ($7.25/hour) for local high school students (or recent graduates) aged 15-19. The Program will begin on June 27th, 2011 and will run for 6 weeks. Final dates are still subject to change.
Members of the program will spend the workday (Monday - Friday) in local parks and nature areas doing conservation projects. These can include building/maintaining trails, restoring habitat, pulling invasive species, planting native species, constructing boardwalks, community gardening, and much more! Also included is some environental education and Green Jobs Readiness Training, as well as a recreational camping trip at the end of the program.

We are two months into our School Year Program and everyone is having a great time! We've visited Camp Cho-Yeh, Sheldon Lake State Park and the Baytown Nature Center, camped in tents and cabins, built a bridge, installed some check steps, cleared a trail and pulled invasive species! Of course, we've all learned a lot about the environment as well and have made good friends!
Keep an eye on this website, as info about the Summer Program, as well as the applications, will be coming up on here shortly!

Applications are now open for the 2010-2011 School Year Program
What to expect: SCA Houston's School Year program (formerly the Conservation Leadership Corps - CLC) is a volunteer service program for high school students aged 15-19. The program is runs for one weekend a month from December to April, with each weekend including a service project, environmental education, green jobs readiness training, outdoor recreation and/or camping! Students must be able to commit to each weekend for the entire progrm.
Program Dates: December 10-12 (we will leave on Friday after school and return Sunday after lunch)
January 15-16
February 19-20
March 26-27
April 22 (single day event)
These dates may still change as projects are chosen. There will also be a parent orientation before the first weekend.
How to apply: Click the link for "Apply" under the "School Year Program" heading to the left. For SCA Alumni (if you have participated in the program in the past) choose the Alumi application. If you have never participated before, please choose the New Member application.
National Crews: Participants in the 2010-2011 School Year Crews will also have the chance to win a scholarship to join a National Crew during the summer of 2011. Scholarship chances will be based on a crew member's work ethic, attitude, attendance and other factors. More details will be available soon.
Application Deadline has been pushed back to November 15th! Apply this week.
September 25: National Public Lands Day "Tryout" for School Year Program
As the School Year Program approaches, it is a good idea to show your interest in SCA by attending our National Public Lands Day event on September 25th at Hermann Park. We will be working from 8-12 removing invasive species in the Bayou Parkland area. For new applicants, this is a great way to show us that you are committed to SCA and would make a great crew member, and for alumni, it is a good chance to stay involved with SCA.

Please note that we need four forms filled out before anyone can participate in the event and if you are under 18, you will need a parent or guardian signature. You can get the forms by emailing Andy Janes at ajanes@thesca.org.
As with other outdoor activities participants should wear long pants..., shirts with sleeves, high socks, and closed toe shoes or work/hiking boots. Sunscreen and insect repellent are recommended. Although water will be provided, participants are encouraged to bring their own individual water bottles. Parking is available at the Pavilion on Almeda Drive, participants are always encouraged to use metro and carpool.

The Green Team Summer Program has been Completed
Thanks to all 36 Crew Members who completed the program! We had a great summer and accomplished a lot of conservation work in Houston area green spaces.\
