The SC Adult Sibling Leadership Network is a project of Parents Reaching Out to Parents, Inc. (PRO-Parents), www.proparents.org, and is funded through a grant from the South Carolina Developmental Disabilities Council.  The grant will provide an opportunity for adult siblings of persons with disabilities to network with each other, share information, gain information, and receive training on how to effectively advocate on behalf of their brother or sister.

“Today’s adult brothers and sisters already assume larger roles in the lives of people with disabilities than in previous generations, due to at least two converging social phenomena.  First, because of advance medical technologies, many people with disabilities now routinely outlive their parents.  When parents pass away, and even as they age and become increasingly less able to care for their children with disabilities, siblings are often left to take on this role.  Second, current social policies encourage people with disabilities to live and work in the community, but the funding to support programs that facilitate community integration is ever-diminishing.

Consequently, siblings of the baby boom and post-baby boom generation are called upon to be more involved than ever before in the lives of their brothers and sisters with disabilities giving new meaning to the phrase “sandwich generation.”
