Minutes for the Meeting May 3, 2010

The meeting was called to order by President Tom Adler at 7:00p.m.

TREASURER’S REPORT - Joe Stopyra

 

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT - Dave Lawrence

-Denotte lights (blinking light on helmet) Cost is $82.00; Dave took orders at the meeting. He may be selling them again in November

-2 bikes are for sale a recumbent bike and a Specialized bike for racing

-June meeting - 4 stations will be set up around the room for demonstrations in bike maintenance

 

RIDE DIRECTOR’S REPORT - Sandy Larson, ride director, is preparing for her East coast ride.

-Peggy Tompson - Report on upcoming trip up the coast:

5 women - Sandy Larson, Peggy, Bea Donovan, Mary Ann Peart, and Karen a friend of Sandy’s

will ride from The Villages to Bethany Beach, Delaware; 979 miles; making stops at Jekyell

Island and Savannah.

- Weekend fall trip to Beach Quarters at Daytona Beach Shores - look for upcoming information

 

SAFETY - John Shire

-Hydration is so important in this heat. Start drinking ½ hour before you leave the house; ride

leaders make sure you made stops for hydration.

-Use of clipless pedals - don’t be afraid to try them. Try clipless pedals on just one foot first.

-Check cleats; clean them; lubricate pedals with chain lubricant.

-Several falls these past few weeks; know where to find an Urgent Care

-Have The Village Taxi Service in your cell phone; they will come pick you up if you have a flat or a problem.

-When you stop take your bike off the path so you are not in the way of other riders.

-Two safety booklets from the Florida Bicycle Association are available.

 

WEB SITE - Ruth Stocchia

-Ruth reported that the club will have a new Web site that is interactive; it cost $500.00 initially and will cost $65.25 each year. More information to come.

-Ruth needs a member to help her with the Web site. Please call her if you can help.

 

MEMBERSHIP - John Duane

-82 new members this year

-Total members - 289

 

AWAY RIDES - Jack Crandall & Bill Coburn

-April rides had about 28 participants; it was a great ride

-There will be no away ride Saturday May 8th

- June ride - Gainesville-Hawthorne trail

-Bill Coburn reported that there are rooms available for the overnight trip to Dunedin next week. See recent e-mail.

 

OLD BUSINESS

-Ken Kraut - report on Habitat House

-Ken reported that the last day of work on the house on Mill Street in Wildwood will be Thursday

-A number of members worked very hard on the house.

Norm Davis - collected food for St. Vincent Food Pantry; he stated the need for food has grown

 

NEW BUSINESS

-Member Phi lLorenc won the 5K and 20K in Peroria, Illinois.

-Vote on starting time for morning rides - 8AM or 8:30AM

With a vote of 26 to 25 the rides will start on Wednesday at 8:30AM

-Brains on Bikes

Wendy Freyler gave a presentation on Brains on Bikes; her daughter was diagnosed with glioblastoma mutiforme brain tumor in 2006 and told she had a year to live. She has climbed mountains and cycled and it doing well. She is now doing a bike ride across the USA to raise money for brain cancer research and patient support. Visit www.brainsonbikes.org to make a tax-deductible contribution.

-July 3rd club picnic and ride - look for more information

-Mary Jane Peterson, member who has been with the club since it was founded, was honored for her 80th birthday which will occur on May 8th. The board gave her a gift of a one hour massage at the Wellness Center.

-Bob Thompson explained a letter from Elton at the Girl Scout Camp. He wants 3 signs to be made for the camp. Elton has also contact The Villages Bicycle Club. The Wood Working Club will make the signs free of charge, but the lumber, etc. must be bought. Dave Lawrence made the motion for the club to donate $100.00 for the materials. The motion was seconded and passed by the club members. Additional personal donation can be made.

 

PROGRAM

-Andrea Coburn gave a presentation 10 members’ bike ride organized and led by Sandy Larson from The Villages to Palatka, to St. Augustine, to Daytona Beach Shores, to Deltona then home to The Villages March 14-18, riding 280 miles.

-A power point created by Sandy Larson of the trip with sound and pictures was shown
