Course Syllabus

12th Grade, 2009-2010

Mr. Bailey

 Course Description

The 12th grade curriculum for Rancho Buena Vista High School centers itself on the exploration of British and World literature through novels, short stories, poetry, and plays.  An exploration of this literature will be a springboard for the development of reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.  Students will be expected to participate in discussions, think critically, and develop their writing skills through portfolio reflection. Students will prepare for the spectrum of state, college and district assessments through literary, vocabulary, and grammar analysis.

Instruction

Much of the analysis completed in this course will be student-centered, meaning each student will be responsible for his/her own learning.  Students will be required to speak in pairs, small groups, or to the class as a whole on a daily basis.

Attendance

Students will be expected to be in class and on time daily.  For each set of two tardies, 30 minutes of detention will be assigned.  The school tardy policy will strictly be enforced.  Unexcused absences and tardies will result in a loss of 10 points for the day.

Class Materials

Students are responsible for supplying standard lined paper, a blue or black pen that writes clearly, and a three-ring notebook. This notebook is to have dividers that separate the notebook into the following sections:

                1- Literature Notes

                2- Vocabulary/Grammar

                3- Formal Writing

                4- Reader Response

Technology

Students will be expected to utilize computers and the internet consistently throughout the course to develop both independent and group analysis.

Late Work

Work will be accepted one day late for half credit.

Make-Up Work

Each of these requirements will be strictly followed:

1-      Assignments given to a student before an absence are due

upon return.

2-      Assignments missed during an absence will have the same

amount of days after the return to be completed.

3-      Responsibility for making up work and tests rests with the

student, not the teacher.

Grading

This course is based on a point/percentage system.  The number of points awarded is based on the length and difficulty of each individual assignment.  As an example, formal essays are worth 100 points and journal entries are worth 10 points. Progress Reports, Semester Grades are determined by the cumulative total of the following:

10%- Attendance

15%- Tests/Quizzes

25%- Homework

25%- Classwork

25%- Formal Writing

This total uses the standard percentage scale for letter grades.
