Q: What are the alternatives? A: Reusable pads can be purchased through companies, folks that hand-make them, or made using a pattern on my links page. Menstrual cups can be purchased from a few companies online or found at some health food stores. Sea sponges can also be used and are usually found online.
Q: Cups? A: There are silicone and rubber based "cups". To me, they look like halved lemons, with a short stem thats used to help pull it out. The top of the cup has pin-sized holes that "leak" when its full, but if it is emptied regularly, no leakage will occur.
Q: Is the bleeding more or less visible with these cups? A: In my opinion, you deal with the 'things' less. There aren’t any strings attached (literally) and theres nothing sitting around in the trash bin because it all goes down the drain.
Q: Wouldn’t wearing a cup look like you have a sac of nuts? A: Nope. It sits inside the vaginal walls and its super easy to use! Its just like using a tampon, except instead of soaking stuff up, it catches it.
Q: Some women bleed more than others. How often must one go to empty the cup out? A: Cups hold more liquid than tampons and don’t pose the same TSS and dioxin risk that tampons do. In my experience, the cup will not need to be emptied more than once every 2-3 hours.
Q: Where can women find this cup and what it looks like? A: Cups are hard to find in stores but widely available online. Hopefully I will be able to provide them pretty soon! In the meantime, please visit the pictures page or the links page for places to purchase Cups and Reusable Pads!
