Run by Bert Watt (cousin of Jim Watt, Scotland's former W.B.C. World Lightweight Champion) who has over 50 years experience of boxing, the Clydeview Amateur Boxing Club has been running for 30 years. It began in an old caretaker's house just off Dumbarton Road and to various locations around Partick before going down to Scotstoun for a period. The training was hard and the venues far from ideal, some with leaking roofs! It was a chance meeting with one of the city councillors that allowed Bert the opportunity to take a few lets at Overnewton. In that time the club has gone from strength-to-strength producing 2 British Champions, 5 Scottish Champions and one young lad who has taken the British Youth Champion ship 4 times. Not bad for a club that trains without access to any real modern facilities; it's just hard work, sweat and the will to win. This article gives some idea of the calibre of talent under threat. Robert Wright (left) and Jamie McLevy displaying some of their medals Bert has had ropes cut to size and custom brackets made up so that the club can literally "build" the ring before each class and take it down afterwards. This will only fit into the Overnewton Recreation Centre and will make it very difficult to find another venue. In fact, the closure of the Overnewton Recreation Centre may be the end of Clydeview ABC. |
