Who are we?We are the users of the centre, local residents and other persons who are concerned about the cuts Glasgow City Council is making. We include Why is the centre important? The centre is heavily used by many organisations and individuals, from local councillors to support groups to martial arts and sports clubs. The closure of the centre will displace these groups to other venues which may be more expensive, or not available at a convenient time/location for users. This could lead to the groups folding or not being able to provide their service as effectively as they do now. You can read more history on the centre here. What is wrong with closure?Where to start? The irony of the host for the 2014 Commonwealth Games shutting grassroots training facilities for sports represented at the games? The acknowledged problem Glasgow has with youth crime and closing a facility that provides activities to children as well as adults? Scotland, and especially Glasgow, having one of the lowest indexes for health in Europe and closing a facility where people can train in a variety of sports? Just what will Glasgow City Council do with the centre if they close it? Demolish it? Mothball it? And at what cost? The centre needs about £2,000 to keep running (ignoring non-urgent repairs), can the Council really not find savings elsewhere?
