The Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, who are the administrators of the provincial parks program, was given $5M in stimulus funds to upgrade Parks, of which Laurie Park was designated. On the evening of January 14th, a public meeting was held with representatives from the department. The staff on hand provided a good overview of the park and highlighted their key objectives in re-development plans for Laurie Park. There were several poster size visual plans on display that outlined the development plans for the park.
There was general consensus that upgrading the facilities, parking facilities and modernizing it and bringing it up to some level of standard was a welcomed initiative. Unfortunately, the plans also included an Amphitheatre, restricted access to the coastline, increased RV and trailer sites, limited tenting area, and NO DAY USE ACCESS . No consideration was given to those who want to take their children for a walk, walk their pets, enjoy a swim off the rocks etc. There will be no access for such activities if you don’t have an RV, trailer or tent and are not willing to pay the entrance fee.
The meeting was not well publicized and we were given only until January 22, 2010 to provide comments and feedback.
If you care about retaining and preserving the current areas of day use at Laurie Park with unrestricted access, please send a letter or email to the following contacts:
