1897 - Plague Laboratory in Bombay

            Renamed as Haffkine Institute

1898 - King’s Institute for Preventive Medicine at  Guindy

1905 - Central Research Institute (Cri) in Kasauli

1907 - Pastuer Institute of India at Connoor (Pii)

1911 - Anti rabies Vaccine Developed at Kasauli

1948 - BCG vaccine technology imported from Statens Serum

              Institute & BCG vaccine Laboratory established in  Chennai.

1977 -Pii converted into automonous body under Union Health Ministry.

1978 – “Health for all by 2000 a.d.” declaration by who at Alma Ata

           expanded programme of immunisation by Govt.of India against Diptheria, Pertussis,

 Tetanus, Polio, Childhood Tb, Typhoid.

 Psu developed  & produced primary vaccines Dpt, Opv,

 Bcg & Typhoid Vaccine and supplied for the national  programme.

1982 - Cri started Japanese Encephalitis vaccine production.

1985 - Universal Immunisation Programme (uip) was launched (Measles Vaccine

 Added and Typhoid Vaccine was removed from the  programme )

1987 - Dept. Of Bio-Technology (dbt) established a modern

 vaccine production unit - Bharat Biologicals &Immunologicals

 Corporation ltd.,(bibcol) at Bulandshahar in U.P. -  opv production  started

           opv production continued till 2000 from bulk vaccine attained from moscow - supplied 70000 million doses

 to unicef.

2000 - vaccine production stopped abruptly- as the moscow  bulk was not  who pre-qualified – the same “weapon”

              which is being used in 2008

 

( From 2000 onwards bibcol is repackinging the imported   bulk , like other private players, from  BT  Biopharma , Indonesia & Chiron , Italy )

 

1989 - dbt established “state of the art” , who/gmp

 compliant vaccine production unit to produce injectable polio vaccine

 ( IPV) – Indian Vaccine Corporation Ltd., (IVICOL). In Gurgaon under   

 Indo French S & T Co-operation agreement for Technology transfer 

 from French, but did not happen – IVCOL was shutdown.

2001 - i^st visit by who/nra team

2004 - II^ND visit by who/nra team

           good manufacturing practice ( gmp ) norms made stringent

2005 - Centenary celebration of cri, kasauli ( dec 2005 ),Dr.AnbuMani  participated

           - Global Alliance for Vaccines & Immunisation(gavi) meeting at

 NewDelhi, Prime Minister of India&Union Health Minister participated.

2006 - Oct-  Who team visits bcg vaccine laboratory under istruction from

 Director General of Health Services (dghs)

2007 - june 19^th - Centenary celebration of pii – Dr.Anbumani Ramadas 

 launches  new combination vaccine manufactured by pii (dpt& hepatitisb)

           - Aug 13^th & 14^th - 3^rd visit by Who/Nra team from Moh &Fw -  included a  Who representative .

           – Dec 14^th  Moh & Fw served showcause notice to all 3 ps units

2008 – Jan 7^th & 8^th -  4^th visit by Moh & Fw team

           – Jan 15^th -  license suspended & vaccine production  stopped in all 3 units

            – Mar 7^th -  gavi meeting at new delhi to discuss itroduction of newer   combination, non uip vaccines into uip
