Welcome to the Speech and Language Program at St. Albans Town Educational Center!
Speech and language services are delivered both in the classroom and in small group settings, depending on the individual needs of the student. Our speech-language pathologists, Douglas MacDonald CCC-SLP, and Sheila Bailey CCC-SLP, work closely with teachers and parents to develop a program that meets the
needs of each child, and refers to Vermont Standards for Listening and Expression.
The speech-language pathologists work as a team with students to improve
their communication abilities so they can be more successful in their lives at home and school.
What Services are available from the SLP's at SATEC?
Referrals/Evaluations: Children with the following communication difficulties may be referred by parents, teachers, or family physicians:
Articulation: Children who have difficulty making speech sounds correctly should be referred. Sounds that children typically have difficulty producing correctly are S, R, and L. It is helpful for teachers to note these problems during the first couple of months of school, as once the child becomes familiar they may "get used to" the way the child sounds. Generally children are not served for these problems until 2nd or 3rd grade, as they may "outgrow" the problem. As mentioned above, these children are checked intermittently to insure normal development is occurring.
Language: Children may have problems with the form (syntax) or content (vocabulary) of language. For example, a child who says "him eat apple" has problems with syntax. A child who overuses fillers such as "thing" or "stuff" may have vocabulary development delays.
Hearing: The SLP's may also be involved with the management of children with hearing problems. Young children who have frequent ear infections may have fluctuating hearing loss, which can have a significant impact on hearing.
Other Problems: Children who have significant fluency (stuttering) problems or voice issues may also be served by the SLP's.
