Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology

Perth, Western Australia 25-28th March 2013

The CAA2013 PERTH conference 'Across Space and Time' will be held at the University of Western Australia Club from Monday 25 – Thursday 28 March 2013. Workshops will be held on Monday 25 March on campus.

CAA (Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology) is the premier international conference for all aspects of computing, quantitative methods and digital applications in Archaeology. With a history going back to 1972, CAA encourages participation from scholars, specialists and experts in the fields of archaeology, history, cultural heritage, digital scholarship, GIS, mathematics, semantic web, informatics and members of other disciplines that complement and extend the interests of CAA.

For further information about this exciting interdisciplinary conference see the website http://caa2013.org

Call for sessions

The CAA 2013 Conference Chairs invite proposals for sessions relating to all aspects of computer applications to stimulate discussion and future progress in the application of digital technologies to archaeology and various aspects of cultural heritage.

Sessions, Roundtables and Workshops proposals are now being invited and are due 20 June 2012.

Themes

The main themes of the conference are likely to include the following, but may be modified or extended according to the session proposals we receive:

1.      Field and laboratory data recording

2.      Data modelling, management and integration

3.      Linked data and the semantic web

4.      Data analysis and visualisation

5.      3D modelling, visualisation and simulations

6.      Spatio-temporal modelling, GIS and remote sensing

7.      Users and interfaces: education, museums and multimedia

8.      Theoretical issues, and the relation of CAA with the Digital Humanities

9.      Digital Cities, cultural heritage interpretation and modelling the past.

Formats

The CAA 2013 Conference organisers invite proposers to read the session guidelines and make their submission accordingly.

Paper sessions:

An explicit aim of the CAA2013 program is to promote networking, knowledge sharing and discussion. In order to do so, there will be a new type of session, called Focus Sessions (see below), which session organisers and presenters are encouraged to consider. Sessions chairs can indicate at this stage if they would like to adopt the Long paper session format, the Focus session format, or a combination of the two. They may wish to approach potentially interested participants as to whether they want to contribute to the developing a proposal.

§         Long paper sessions:

A session of related 20 minute papers. This is an opportunity to present new and ground-breaking research in a conventional presentation and power point format. There will be questions after each session; however, the time limit for the paper need to be strictly adhered to.

§         Focus sessions:

A session consisting of approximately ten thematically related 5 minute key-point presentations, an optional discussion to pull the theme together, followed by a room-based break organised around posters or demonstrations presenting additional information.

We encourage session organisers to think outside the box and consider whether the Focus Sessions would present better networking and learning opportunities rather than traditional Long Paper Sessions.

Roundtables:

Roundtables to address a specific topic or issue comprising of up to 10 speakers coordinated by one or more individuals. Papers may be short or long presentations at the discretion of the coordinator(s) but would normally include at least 30 minutes for general discussion from the floor.

Workshops:

We are also inviting submissions for pre-conference workshops to be held on Monday 25 March. Workshops on applied research are welcome. Workshops will normally last 2 - 3 hours and should be scheduled to finish by mid-afternoon in time for the first plenary session of the Conference. Please include some practical work or other active participation of attendees, rather than an extended lecture. In proposing workshops, please indicate any technical facilities required for example, a computer lab or wireless network and whether participants should bring own laptops. Also please indicate the maximum number of participants and any prior knowledge or skills required.

Environmental records of climate change and human impacts in mountain regions; 21-24 Aug. 2012; Glasgow, Scotland

posted May 14, 2012 3:39 PM by Rob Sternberg   [ updated May 14, 2012 3:40 PM ]

We would like to draw your attention to session 8 (Environmental records of climate change and human impacts in mountain regions) at the 12th International Paleolimnology Symposium, to be held 21-24th August 2012 in Glasgow, Scotland (http://paleolim.org/ips2012/).

Mountainous areas of the world are often justifiably famous for their physiographical, biological and cultural diversity. However, there remain many uncertainties over the precise role that environmental change has played in the development in these regions, due in part to the general lack of archival records and the rapid-scale shifts of many climatic processes. Under the right conditions, however, higher elevation water bodies can provide sensitive, high-resolution records of past environmental change, despite challenges in terms of physiography, sedimentology and accessibility.

This session aims to bring together researchers working on high-resolution montane lake sequences and other upland depositional environments, with a diversity of backgrounds and approaches, in order to review our understanding of both the potential and challenges of this area of palaeolimnology and to stimulate inter-disciplinary discussion. We would particularly like to encourage those researchers working in less well-represented mountain regions of the globe and those working collaboratively in all aspects of this field.

We are delighted that the keynote speaker for our session will be Dr Simon Haberle (ANU).

Abstracts will be accepted until July 1st, but please note that early bird registration ends May 15th.

Those wanting to submit abstracts, or to discuss contributing, are welcome to contact the session conveners.

We look forward to seeing you in Glasgow.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Near Surface Geophysics Group (NSGG) day meeting: Recent Work in
Archaeological Geophysics
Geological Society of London, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London
4th December 2012
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Near surface geophysical techniques are now a well established tool for the evaluation of archaeological sites from their initial discovery to subsequent interpretation and management. However, this success has brought new challenges with ever larger areas needing to be surveyed rapidly and greater demands to characterise buried remains without excavation meaning ongoing improvement of techniques and methodologies is necessary. Meanwhile exciting new archaeological discoveries continue to be made with geophysics and it is valuable to share these with colleagues.

This will be the tenth in a succession of biennial meetings in which contributors present and debate the results of recent research and case studies. Suppliers of equipment and software also attend and the meeting therefore represents an invaluable opportunity for archaeological and geophysical practitioners, students, academic and amateur researchers to catch up with recent research and developments.

Please note that unlike recent previous meetings in this series there will regrettably not be a forensic geosciences meeting the following day as the Forensic Geosciences Group have a prior conference commitment earlier in the year.

The meeting typically attracts 100 or more participants and, as well as oral presentations, there will be space for commercial and poster displays. Those interested in contributing are warmly encouraged to contact the convenor, and to submit abstracts of up to 1000 words in length, accompanied by suitable greyscale illustrative material, no later than the 31st August 2012. These will be collated and made available to all those attending.

The standard registration fee is £25 but registered students and fellows of the Geological Society can attend for £15 (we regret that owing to rising costs this year we have to ask fellows to contribute towards catering costs). The fee includes entrance to the talks, a printed book of abstracts and tea/coffee and biscuits at breaks. A further charge will be made for commercial exhibitors. Pre-registration and payment (to The Geological Society) is preferred and will be possible between 1st July and 23rd November 2012. Please contact: Paul Linford at the address below.

Symposium on Chert and Other Knappable Materials; 20–24 August 2013, Romania

posted Apr 2, 2012 10:45 AM by Rob Sternberg

Fifth Arheoinvest Symposium
‘Stories Written in Stone’
International Symposium on Chert and Other Knappable Materials

20–24 August 2013

"Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi, Romania

As far as raw materials go, chert and other knappable stone stand out as some of the most common materials in the archaeological record, and at some sites the only preserved material. They were used in almost every corner of the world, from the Palaeolithic up until today. Use of these materials even predates the appearance of our own species. Being so widespread both geographically as well as chronologically, this topic merits a global meeting of researchers to discuss and compare our findings.

This conference will cover all aspects of knapped stone raw materials from geological origin, to mining, usage, and laboratory analyses on these materials. Although we expect that there will be more focus on chert and other microcrystalline quartz varieties, we also encourage presentations related to other knappable materials such as obsidian, quartzite, rhyolite and others. Papers will be accepted on any culture or time period. Whether you are a field archaeologist, laboratory researcher, ethnographer or a modern day knapper yourself, come tell us your stories.

Main Sessions
The symposium will focus on two major themes: (1) the chaîne opératoire of knapped stone artefacts, and (2) auxilliary sciences related to lithics (in particular microcrystaline quartz).

Theme 1 - Chaîne opératoire
- Raw material exploitation strategies — mining and surface collecting
- Ancient lithic trade and economics
- Stone tool production and processing techniques
- Use-wear analyses — signs of usage on stone tools (a.k.a. traceology)

Theme 2 - Auxilliary sciences
- Microcrystaline quartz as a geological material
- Characterising lithic sources
- Lithotheques — collections of comparative raw materials
- Gemology — Microcrystaline quartz as a gemstone today and in the past

Sessions Proposals
We are pleased to invite proposals for themed sessions, round table discussions or workshops for the upcoming symposium. Sessions are invited on current issues and research in the field of microcrystaline quartz (knapped or otherwise) or knappable materials in general. Sessions may be specific to methodology, regional research, or any other theme.

More information
For more information, please visit the symposium website, or contact Otis Crandell (otis.crandell@ubbcluj.ro) or Vasile Cotiugă (vasicot@uaic.ro).

AAA Conference 2012

Centre for Archaeological Science, University of Wollongong

Call for Session Proposals

6 March 2012

The AAA 2012 Conference will be hosted by the Centre for Archaeological Science, University of Wollongong.  The conference will be held at the Novotel Wollongong from Monday 10 to Thursday 13 December 2012, following various Welcome Events that will be held on Sunday 9 December 2012.

The theme for AAA2012 will be ‘Science and Archaeology’ and we hope it will embrace a variety of approaches, including the role of science in archaeology, the development and application of scientific techniques to particular archaeological questions, and the interface between the sciences and the humanities in archaeology

The call for session abstracts is now open. We especially welcome session submissions linked with the conference theme (Science and Archaeology), but will certainly consider others. Session organisers should provide a title and brief outline (30 words) of the proposed session(s), with an estimate of the number of speakers and an estimate of the number of individual sessions requested. Individual sessions will run for 1.5 hours and should include 4 or 5 presentations. Please note that speakers may only present one paper during the conference, although they may be co-authors on other papers, and this needs to be taken into account when people are organising sessions.

Session proposals should be submitted by COB 30th March 2012 – submissions can be made via the AAA Conference website by clicking on the upload link on the ‘Call for Sessions’ page at:

http://conference.australianarchaeology.com.au/?page_id=104

Please note that many of the other pages for the AAA conference website are under construction and will be added as they become available – the AAA email list will be the primary place that notifications about conference happenings and updates to the website will be posted, so keep an eye open for them.

In early April, we will announce the conference sessions that have been accepted and place a call for Paper Abstracts to be submitted.

Conference registrations will open in early May.

Kind regards,

The AAA2012 Conference Organising Committee
