If
you direct an archaeological field project, please assist us by taking
this brief survey. The survey is designed to gather information about
archaeologists’ engagement with conservation
and identify areas in which the conservation community can improve. We
would appreciate your participation whether or not you have used the
services of a professional conservator, and we hope to have responses
from a broad range of archaeologists working on
different types of sites, both terrestrial and underwater.
·
The
survey is primarily multiple-choice and takes approximately 5 minutes
to complete. Your response will be anonymous unless you choose to
provide contact information. If you do
give us your name, your contact information and survey responses will
be kept confidential and only discussed without attribution.
·
The survey results will be shared with both the archaeological and conservation communities.
·
The survey will be active for three weeks, until the 19th February 2012. If you know other directors who are good candidates for this survey, please forward the link.

The Biblical Archaeology Society is pleased to announce the publication of the annual Biblical Archaeology Review (BAR)
Dig issue (January/February 2012), which features a listing of more
than 20 excavation projects in Israel and Jordan that are looking for
volunteers for the upcoming 2012 season. In addition, the issue features
the article “Join a Dig, See the World” that highlights the many travel
adventures and cultural opportunities volunteers can enjoy while
participating on an archaeological excavation in the Middle East. Interested applicants are encouraged to visit BAS online at http://digs.bib-arch.org. There we provide additional information on projects listed in the current issue of BAR,
as well as dozens of other projects that are available only online,
including digs in Italy and Spain. For most excavation opportunities,
applicants of all ages and levels of experience are welcome to apply,
and some programs offer course credit for participation. We also provide
information about season dates, project directors, excavation fees and
who to contact about volunteering for the upcoming season. While viewing the 2012 dig opportunities, visitors to the BAS Web site can also download the free eBook I Volunteered For This? Life on an Archaeological Dig, an informative, amusing and sometimes touching collection of articles about dig life by ordinary excavation volunteers. And on Bible History Daily, visitors can read the stories of Hershel Shanks and other BAR
editors who relate their varied experiences on archaeological digs and
what they learned about the world and themselves during their travels. The Biblical Archaeology Society is also proud to announce its 2012 BAS
Dig Scholarships competition, which offers funding for selected
applicants who wish to participate in an archaeological excavation. More
information about the BAS Dig Scholarships, including application
instructions, can be found at http://digs.bib-arch.org/scholarships. Ellyn Mitowski Biblical Archaeology Society 4710 41st Street NW Washington, DC 20016 T: 202-364-3300 x216 F: 202-364-2636 emitowski@bib-arch.org www.biblicalarchaeology.org |

Announcing the opportunity of a travel grant award for students! The Richard Hay Student Paper/Poster Award is a travel grant awarded to a student presenting a paper or poster at the Geological Society of America's annual meeting. The grant is a competitive award based on the evaluation of the scientific merit of the research topic, and the clarity of an expanded abstract for the paper or poster prepared by a student for presentation in the Archaeological Geology Division's technical session at the annual meeting. Applicants must be students who have already submitted their abstract successfully for the meeting, and plannig to attend this year's GSA conference in Minneapolis. Richard Hay was a long-standing member of the Archaeological Geology Division of GSA, and he had a long and distinguished career in sedimentary geology, mineralogy, and archaeological geology. He is particularly well known for his work on the Olduvai Gorge and Laetoli hominid-bearing sites and was awarded the Archaeological Geology Division's Rip Rapp award in 2000. The deadline to apply for this year’s Richard Hay Student Paper/Poster Award is soon - 20 September 2011. Submission directions and the application forms are available online at this url: http://rock.geosociety.org/arch/\For full consideration, completed application materials and letters of support must be emailed. Edited by David C Cowley EAC Occasional Paper No. 5 Remote sensing is one of the main foundations of archaeological data, under pinning knowledge and understanding of the historic environment. The volume, arising from a symposium organised by the Europae Archaeologiae Consilium (EAC) and the Aerial Archaeology Research Group (AARG), provides up to date expert
statements on the methodologies, achievements and potential of remote sensing with a particular focus on archaeological heritage management. Well-established approaches and techniques are set alongside new technologies and data-sources, with discussion covering relative merits and applicability, and the need for integrated approaches to understanding and managing the landscape. Discussions cover aerial photography, both modern and historic, LiDAR, satellite imagery, multi- and hyper-spectral data, sonar and geophysical survey, addressing both terrestrial and maritime contexts. Case studies drawn from the contrasting landscapes of Europe illustrate best practice and innovative projects. Call for Applications - 2011 R.E. Taylor Student Poster Competition R.E. TAYLOR STUDENT POSTER AWARD COMPETITION ANNOUNCEMENT R.E. Taylor Student Poster Award Competition at the SAA 2011. Deadline for submissions: March 21, 2011 As
a result of a collaborative effort with the Society for American
Archaeology, the Society for Archaeological Sciences will acknowledge an
outstanding student poster for its innovative contribution in the use
of scientific technologies to archaeological research by granting the R.
E. Taylor Award, consisting of 100 US dollars and a one-year
subscription to the SAS Bulletin. Financial support for the Taylor Award
derives from the membership royalties of those who have joined us in
our quest of making of archaeological sciences relevant to the study of
humankind by using the tools of tomorrow. This
prestigious award is named in honor of Professor Emeritus R. Ervin
Taylor of the University of California at Riverside for his outstanding
contributions in the development and application of radiocarbon dating
in archaeological research and dedication to the founding of the Society
for Archaeological Sciences, for his leading role as President (1980)
and General Secretary (1981-2002) and his committed service as editor of
the SAS Bulletin. In 2004, the SAA recognized his invaluable
contributions with the granting of the 2004 Fryxell Award for
Interdisciplinary Research. For
more than a decade, receiving the Taylor R. E. award has enhanced the
career of those who are now prominent young scholars and professionals.
For 2011, SAS will offer the R. E. Taylor Award at the SAA's 76th
Anniversary Meeting in Sacramento, CA. Entries will be judged on the
significance of the archaeological problem, appropriateness of the
methods used, soundness of conclusions, quality of the poster display,
and oral presentation of the poster by the student, who should be the
first author in order to compete. To be considered for this award, students must submit an application via email to Destiny Crider (destiny.crider@asu.edu) by March 21, 2011.
Applications in form of an email message must include the title and
abstract of the poster, proof that you have registered for the SAA
meetings in Sacramento (email from the SAA), and proof of your status as
an undergraduate or graduate student (usually appears on your SAA
registration). Students will also submit a .pdf version of their poster on or before March 21, 2011. An
email confirmation that your application has been received will be sent
to you. Please keep this email confirmation. This will give the judges
adequate time to evaluate your posters. Judges will be present at the
SAA meeting and will ask questions to the student about
their proposed research. Prizes will be awarded at the SAA meeting,
following the end of the last poster session (final program is pending). Good luck to everyone! Sandra L.
