This is my dad, Simon Findling who sered in WWII in the British Armed forces, in the Jewish Brigade. he fought his way from North Africa, through Italy and ended the war in Belgium, actually not that far from Metz, France where he was born. As things got bad in France, especially for the Jewish population, my father and his brother escaped through the Pyrenees mountains into Spain. My dad made his way to what then was Palestine, under the British Mandate and enlisted in the Jewish Brigade.
My Dad again, at the end of WWII in Anwerp, Belgium in some kindof a fair or amusment park.
Here is my Dad firing a Czech Beza Machine gun in the Israel's War of Independance 1948
On the left a picture taken by my dad from his position in Jerusalem, during the War of Independance.
On the right a that was taken in 1970/71. Note that the background is almost the same! This is not an active war picture, just securing a major parade on Independance day.
On the left I am in a WWII vintage M3 Half-Track. Note the Bazooka sticking up behind the door. Later on, hese half-track even got upgraded with the diesel engines used in the M-113. On the right, me with my Uzi sub-machine gun, folding stock, loaded with 2 magazines in an L-shaped bracket.
These five pictures were taken in 1970/71 on the Suez Canal from one of the fortified points I served in at that time. Thes pictures were taken after the Attrition War of 1969-70. I had served in that area then too
.
The picture above was taken after the 1973 Yom Kippur War somewhere on the Golan Heights. Notice, by the dress that it is cold.
The two pictures below were taken in 1974 after the Yom Kippur War. I was already in the reserves, here at an outpost looking at Southern Lebanon. The machine gun is a good old Browning 30 caliber.
