Jeremy Kane - Director of Bands

 

Jeremy Kane, a graduate of the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music, holds a Bachelors of Music Education with emphasis in both instrumental and general music, and holds a Masters degree in music education from Boston University with a thesis on 7th grade band curriculum.  Mr. Kane is eagerly awaiting the release of his first publication, "Escape from Pirate Cove" for percussion ensemble, due to be released by Row-loff Productions in early 2010.  Mr. Kane is enthusiastically entering his 10th year teaching band, his 5th at Santan Junior High and he is anxious to share his love of music with his students.

Mr. Kane's instrument of expertise is percussion, specializing in world percussion. Kane has studied Cuban, Brazilian, and Ghanain drumming, spending three months in Ghana, West Africa studying Ewe music. Kane also prides himself on playing a large variety of instruments including Piano, Sax, Trumpet, and Guitar.  Jeremy is an active member of MENC, PAS, AMEA and ABODA.

Mr. Kane is DCI alumnus being a member of the "Long Blue Line" as a former member of the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps from Casper Wyoming.  Mr. Kane led the Santan Storm Drumline to a season high 81.6 with their show "Spongebob Live in Concert". The drumline took 1st place in WGAZ's Scholastic Middle School division and is looking forward to a rewarding season next year with their show "The Shaolin Temple: The 10 Tigers of Guandong".

The woodwind programs continue to flourish at Santan with all bands earning numerous awards throughout the year including another strong performance at the Anaheim Heritage Festival in 2009.

Mr. Kane is married to his lovely wife Lerie, and has two children, Ethan 9 and Brennan 6, as well as another on the way!  Mr. Kane enjoys basketball, golf, hiking, OHV's and is an avid fan of the Phoenix Suns of which he is a member of their drumline, PHX Percussion!  Last season PHX Percussion had the opportunity to perform during All Star Weekend with Mr. Kane's back making it on TNT!  Kane still holds his basketball alegance to his Portland, Oregon roots by cheering for the Trailblazers as well.  Rip city baby :)

 

Sam Tarrel - Percussion Instructor

 

Sam Tarrel was born in Mountain View California, grew up in San Jose, and has lived the past 9 years in Hillsboro Oregon, just outside of Portland.

Over the past 4 years he has been an active educator in the Portland metro area, teaching at Evergreen, Westview, Centennial, and Beaverton High Schools, among others. He most recently moved to Mesa, Arizona where he is the percussion caption head at Skyline High School.

His marching experience began in 2003 when he marched snare drum with the Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps. He continued with the Crusaders in 2004 when they won the Division 3 world championship in Denver, Colorado. In 2005, he joined the Seattle Cascades, and in 2007 he aged out with the Arizona Academy.

He has had the privilege of studying with some of the most influential people in the marching arts activity, including Mike Apodaca, David Reeves, Jeff Queen, Jeff Ausdemore, Murray Gusseck, Ralph Hardimon, and Glen Crosby.

He is currently studying to be a chef at Scottsdale Culinary Institute, while still actively pursuing his passion for music.
