-          The Tenth Warwick Symposium on Parish Research

The ‘Warwick Network for Parish Research’’ has been running an annual symposium highlighting new work on late medieval and early modern parishes since 2003. While mainly an academic initiative, the events have also attracted interest from a wider public. Further information on all previous meetings can be found at http://go.warwick.ac.uk/parishsymposium.

In 2012 we will celebrate the 10th anniversary meeting and would like to mark it by involving a wide range of groups and societies interested in parish history. Under the theme of ‘Parish Studies Today’, the overall aim is to showcase the large variety of work currently pursued in the field. Ideally, this could help to forge closer ties between researchers and facilitate the exchange of ideas. At present, university historians are often unaware of the many projects undertaken by community groups, while the latter may find it difficult to access specialized research. This event – organized in conjunction with the ‘British Association for Local History’ and the ‘Centre for the Study of Christianity and Culture’ at the University of York – hopes to bridge this divide.

The Symposium will take place over the weekend of 25-26 May 2012 (1-3 days depending on response) on Warwick’s Central Campus. Activities might include project presentations, panel discussions, poster displays, publication stalls, video presentations, lectures, methodical workshops etc. There will also be plenary lectures by leading scholars on topics ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day. So, we would like to ask whether you / your organization / society can take part. Symposium delegates would be interested to hear about local histories, community websites, churchyard projects, 3-D modelling of church interiors, art historical / stained glass research, early music networks, church conservation and restoration work, design of teaching materials / research tools, transcriptions of records and many further initiatives.

One-page proposals (with an indication of the topic, content, format and, if applicable, audiovisual elements of your contributions) should be sent to the contact email below by 15 December 2011 at the latest. The generous support by the Humanities Research Centre of the University of Warwick and the co-organizers will help to keep conference costs to a minimum. David Underdown Conference

The big event this year was a special conference at Exeter University 9-10 July 2011 in honour of the late David Underdown in partnership with the University. Distinguished academics gave keynote papers including Tim Harris, Chris Brooks, Donald Spaeth, Chris Brooks, and Richard Hoyle and there were four contributions from SANHS members, which were warmly received. Saturday evening we had a reception and there was a SANHS bookstall on both days.

Sadly there were few SANHS members in the audience but the hospitality extended to us by the University was faultless and the food, including buffet lunches and the conference dinner, was superb. David Underdown’s widow Susan Amussen joined us and extended her warm thanks for putting on the conference in his honour. Other delegates came from Scotland, East Anglia, Devon and Cornwall and varied in age from a highly intelligent schoolgirl to a retired lady about to embark on a history degree.
