Middle School General Music

MIDDLE SCHOOL GENERAL MUSIC

Dear Parents:

Please sign and return the enclosed information about the music course for students at the middle school level.  Hopefully, it will enlighten you as to my grading system and expectations for students in my course.  When you sign and return the bottom portion of this paper, a five-point assignment will have been completed.

I.     THE COURSE

A.  Students will be introduced to a variety of music from different

                        cultures and time periods.

B.  Students will learn about the elements of music and relate them to

musical examples.

C.  Students will work on improving their listening/comprehension/

concentration skills with regard to music, but hopefully impacting

other academic and real-life areas as well.

II.       GRADING

A.  Grades are based on a total point system.

B.  Tests are usually 30-40 points, while assignments and quizzes run from 5 to 20 points.

C.  Students are given two points for each day they are present in class.  Students keep their points if they remain on task, attentive and do not act as a disruption or distraction.  These are known as Participation Points.

D.  Progress reports will be sent every three weeks, according to school policy.

E.   Students are given opportunities to increase their point totals by answering extra-credit questions in class.  The only extra-credit that I accept is that which I generate.  Students should take advantage of these opportunities as they come along.

III. ATTENDANCE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

A.  As in all subjects, daily attendance gives the student a better chance for success.

B.  Listening assignments are designed to be done in class, and are not forwarded to the

in-school suspension room, or sent home. While a legitimately missed listening assignment

does not count against a student, it can put him or her at a disadvantage when a class is tested

at the end of a topic.

C.      Students are expected to copy notes and definitions from the blackboard and bring them to

class daily.  These definitions make up the main portion of every test.

D.      Students who persist in being disruptive and not on task will be given a “Discipline

Referral” and dealt with in the office.
