The 2010 Shamokin Area
Competition Band
Proudly Presents
The Planets
The Shamokin Area School District is proud to present for your listening enjoyment the 2010 Shamokin Area High School Competition Band.
The Shamokin Area High School Competition Band is comprised of volunteers from within the high school instrumental program. The band is under the field leadership of Drum Major Stephanie Dressler.
The 2010 Field Show is The Planets, Op. 32, a seven-movement orchestral suite by the British composer Gustav Holst. The first complete public performance took place in London on November 15, 1920. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst. The band will begin with Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun. The planet is named after the Roman god of war. It is often described as the "Red Planet", as the iron oxide prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance. The performance continues as we travel to Venus, the second planet from the Sun. The planet is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. After the Moon, it is the brightest natural object in the night sky. The ensemble will conclude tonight’s performance with Jupiter, the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest planet within the Solar System. Jupiter is classified as a gas giant along with Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Together, these four planets are sometimes referred to as the Jovian planets.
