Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve
The Oorlogskloof Hiking Trails are situated inside the Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve, 16 km outside the town of Niewoudtville in the Northern Cape.
It consists of two circular trails; Rock Pigeon (4-5 days) and Rameron Pigeon (4-7 days)
and two day hikes; Leopard Trap (15.5 km) and Rietvlei (17.9 km)
These trails provide breathtaking views over the Oorlogskloof River canyon and the 'Knersvlakte". Amazing sandstone rock formations and plentiful Bushman paintings and springs add to the experience.
The Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve hosts a wide variety of animals and plant communities.
From Karee forests next tot the river to lovely Fynbos on the plateau.
These trails truly provide something for every hiker.
Tsitsikamma Falls Adventure Park is on a property with 3 waterfalls along an 800m stretch of river and spectacular views.
The indigenous ferns and other plant life will make you feel as if you are in paradise.
Guest and visitors are welcome to come and enjoy the scenery along the river and see our "Waterfall Zipline Tours"
(Better known in South Africa as "Foofi or Foefie Slides", in South America as "Canopy Tours" or "Flying Fox" )
This Adventure Waterfall Zipline Tour "foefie-slide" tour takes you on 8 cable rides over the Kruis River and down a ravine over three waterfalls. Each section has its own surprises, adventure, wonders and beautiful views over our fauna and flora.
The river can be seen and heard throughout the whole tour.
Our longest slide is 211m and is 50m above ground.
We make use of the latest and most modern equipment and are one of the first in SA to utilize this equipment.
We are also making use of a patented braking system and we are the first to use this system in the adventure business.
BIRDS OF EDEN, IS THE GARDEN ROUTE’S VERY OWN WORLD CLASS FREE FLIGHT BIRD SANCTUARY.
The unique two hectare dome (the World’s largest) spans over a gorge of indigenous forest. The sanctuary has its own mysterious ruin, which incorporates a walk-behind waterfall.
Another feature is its amphitheatre, which has the ability to seat over 200 visitors.
The sanctuary’s dome incorporates the ability to synthesise thunder and create short spells of rain from an irrigation system in the dome structure. Roofed viewpoints within the gorge have been erected for use during these brief rain storms. See my pics Rock Hopper Trail
Trail distance: 8km (6 hours) Nearest Town: Wellington (10km) Region: Boland Trial description: This linear trail in Bainskloof is moderate to difficult, depending on your level of fitness. The strenuous sections involve rock hopping, swimming and lots of adventure. Find your own way down the boulder-strewn riverbed surrounded by riverine bush.
Although most of the water obstacles can be side-stepped, there's no getting around a pool near Tweede Tol which you will have to wade through. The trail starts at Bainskloof Lodge, Bainskloof Pass and follows the Witte River to the finish at the Tweede Tol picnic site (download their heir brosure, see below). Because it is a linear trail, you will need a vehicle at the start and another at the finish. The route is not open when the river is too high. Hazards include volatile weather, flooding rivers after rain, slippery rocks, wind and ticks! Fish Hoek gained its place in World history with the discovery of a fossilised
skeleton in 1926 that had been used as a shelter by prehistoric man.
A father and son named Victor and Bertie Peers were excavating the cave site and discovered many stone tools and the remains of nine people,
one of whom became the famous Fish Hoek Man and made scientific history. His skull is estimated to be about 12 000 years old and had the largest brain area of any skull its age found up until that time.
Boesmanskloof Trail
Farmers around the Klapmutskop have joined forces This is a linear trail of 17km and stretches from Greyton to McGregor through the beautiful Riviersonderend conservation area. Transport needs to be arranged from the end of the trail unless a decision is taken to hike the trail in both directions over two days which is a popular options. There is plenty of excellent overnight accommodation to be had in both towns. It should be noted that the McGregor end finishes at Die Galg which is approximately 14km outside McGregor. The trail can be considered fairly strenuous & hikers should be fit and well equipped. See my pics and established the Klapmutskop Conservancy in an attempt to save one of the most endangered and smallest of the world’s six plant kingdoms. A hiking trail take one to the top of Klapmutskop where hikers experience a breathtaking indigenous yellowwood forest and sweeping view of False Bay, Table Mountain, Franschoek, Paarl & the rest of the Boland. Mountain Biking; Full Moon Walks; Birdwatching; Team Building & Environmental. Permits are available at the Dirtopia Trail Centre. Shorter walks also marked. Wreck of the Kakapo
The Kakapo left Cape Town in 1900 for Sydney on a misty night. Captain Nicolaysen saw Chapman's Peak and thought it was Cape Point. He turned sharp east but instead of cruising into False Bay he 'parked' his boat on Noordhoek Beach.
The Slangkop Lighthouse has prevented such mishaps from recurring since 1918. The Kakapo was named after a very rare and very unique parrot that is virtually extinct. See links to previous years below
