Iron

What:

Iron is a mineral that's needed to bring oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.  It transfers the oxygen in your blood to all the cells in your body that need it.

Why:

Iron is definitely needed to help you learn! Children who suffer from iron deficiency or anemia are often tired, have a short attention span, become easily distracted, and score poorly on tests at school.  They are even known for misbehaving!

How:

The best way to meet your body's iron needs is by eating foods such as red meat, fish, enriched bread products, and leafy greens like broccoli.  Since your body absorbs iron better when its consumed with vitamin C, it's a good idea to have a bowl of strawberries following a hamburger, or a glass of orange juice with iron-enriched toast.
