Why Should I Eat That??

"Eat your carrots!"

"Finish your milk!"

"Don't touch those cookies!"

Sound familiar, kids? Rather than being scolded about what to eat and what not to eat, wouldn't you like to know why you should -- or shouldn't -- eat it? The truth is, chowing down on foods like carrots and milk actually help your body to grow, your mind to learn, and provide the energy to play.  The purpose of this website is to tell you why!

Your body depends on many different foods to deliver much needed energy and nutrients to your body.  Some foods earn an A+ for their vitamin and nutrient content.  Others earn Cs and Ds. When you make nutritious choices and consume A+ foods, your body will thrive.  But when you choose foods that aren't as nutritious, your body suffers.

Unfortunately, nearly 40% of American children are at risk of becoming obese and developing Type II diabetes. And nearly one quarter of all American kids miss out on fruits and vegetables each day! But perhaps if these kids understood why eating well today is the foundation for a healthy future, maybe they'd be more inclined to make A+ choices all the time.

How To Use This Site

This website is meant to be a resource for kids who want to learn the role foods play in our emotional and physical health.

My Pyramid for Kids is a great resource to help you figure out what to eat and how much to eat.  Use this site as a way to learn why you should eat it!

To make healthy shopping easier, I've created the "Grocery Pyramid" which lists nutritious kid-favorite foods from each of the pyramid's food groups.  You'll also notice that links are embedded into the Grocery Pyramid allowing you to explore the vitamin and nutrient qualities of several listed foods.
