Club Founder: Susan Kang Nam

Where They Meet: Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Square, Copley Square ~Massachusetts

Susan Kang Nam Tells the Story: We are artists, writers, consultants, businessmen and women. We are mothers, husbands, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, sisters, brothers and friends. We are job seekers, job finders, podcasters and bloggers. We are attractive, well-dressed men and women attempting to balance our lives. And we are getting shushed.

Our Vision

At Salty Legs Career, we're working together to support one another as we grow in our careers. We exchange resources, share expertise and generate thought-leading discussions to pursue a community of job seekers, advisers, entrepreneurs alike. Since our nomination last fall by ABC News Workforce contributor Tory Johnson to the network's website career page, we have grown our membership, brought in guest speakers and shared resources and referrals.

Working together, Salty legs members are building a cohesive and unique community for members and guest speakers on and offline.

Our Goals include:

    • Creating opportunities to brainstorm among our peers to leverage our members’ combined experience and expertise to advance each person’s individual career goals

    • Catering to our members’ individual goals - professional, social and personal

    • Fostering a community of professionals that transcends gender, age and career status. Salty Legs members include men and women; job seekers looking for full-time employment; independent contractors trying to grow their client base; and full-time employees who lend support and want to expand their networks

Leveraging social media sites, such as Facebook (private), Linkedin and Twitter, which allows members to share ideas, leads and other important information online in a secure environment in addition to attending regular meetings

Our Club Name has been voted from 20 plus names generated over 48 hours. Salty Legs, for a couple of reasons. We liked Salt because we often use the old saying "worth her weight in salt" another words someone who is worth their salt deserves respect and we added legs to make it a bit odd and memorable. As the club founder, I would like to personally thank everyone for their contributions, their willingness to be open, and most importantly have a positive attitude throughout the meeting.

From Robert Padgett, Our Club Publicist:

Salty Legs Career Club is a career-networking group formed in the Fall of 2008. And about the group’s name: Just as those who drove New England’s maritime economy had the sea legs to brave rough seas, Salty Legs members have the skill and confidence to weather the most tumultuous jobs environment. The group not only helps those looking for new jobs; it also provides information and contacts for others that want to expand their businesses and enhance their careers. Members range in age from Baby Boomers to Generation Y and include experts in new media, marketing, human resources, graphic design, public relations and copy writing. Salty Legs conducts most of its business virtually on Facebook and meets every two weeks at Harvard University. The meetings involve round table discussions and presentations by experts to inspire and educate members to enhance their careers and exploit the opportunities of the new economy.

About Job Club Founder Susan Kang Nam

Susan Kang Nam is a networking professional and executive and educational recruiter who specializes in international talent acquisition and development. Susan started the Salty Legs career club in October 2008 after networking online via Twitter with Tory Johnson from ABC News GMA Job Club, as a way to reach out to local professionals in Boston area. Susan’s goals for the group included fostering an environment in which members could interact and learn from each other and from outside experts she invites to for group discussions. Active on Facebook, Twitter and various Ning Sites, Susan has led the group to explore social media tools as a way to enhance their networking and, ultimately, lead to successful job searches and career enhancement.
