Obituary

We mourn the loss, yet celebrate the life of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and esteemed scholar, who departed from this world at the age of 94. Saleh is survived by his wife of almost 50 years of blissful matrimony, Laurice Hamarneh. He was the proud father of Mutasim (Matt), late Husam, Ghassan and Bushra. A loving grandfather to five grandchildren; Saleh Jr., Fareed, Nader, Dani, and Rami, who will cherish their memories with “Jiddo” (Grandpa). Saleh is also survived by his sister Yusra Ochia and many cousins. Saleh was born in the historical city of Madaba in Jordan. A peace-loving individual, he was a beacon of wisdom and compassion, not only for his family, but for everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a cherished friend to many, his kindness and wisdom drawing people towards him. His friends loved him dearly and will miss his enlightening conversations and warm companionship.Saleh was a Fulbright and DAAD scholar who dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge, making significant contributions to the field of history. His prolific career is marked by the authorship of multiple books and numerous scholarly articles that have enlightened many in the academic world. An accomplished educator, he held a PhD degree from Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland, and two master's degrees in History and Archaeology. His passion for education was not just confined to his own learning, but extended to inspiring others. He shaped the minds of countless students over his illustrious career that spanned more than 50 years.Saleh’s contributions were recognized with multiple awards and accolades, including the prestigious Jerusalem’s Day Shield of Honor. He was honored by the Union of Arab Historians in Iraq for his contributions to Arab history. The Ministry of Culture in Poland recognized him for his contributions to translating Polish literature and teaching in Poland.A man of many passions, he loved to travel and had visited all corners of the world. His journeys enriched his life and broadened his perspectives and experiences he often shared with his loved ones. An avid reader, he spent countless hours immersed in books. His passion for poetry was infectious. He found joy in both writing and reading verses, often sharing his favorite poems with his loved ones. His love and knowledge of classical music was profound, often filling his home with the harmonious melodies of Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach. His intellectual pursuits extended to the game board as well, where he was a formidable opponent in chess and backgammon. His daily walks were a testament to his vitality and his appreciation for life's simple pleasures.His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those he touched. His life was a testament to the power of education, the importance of peace, and the enduring value of love and family. May his soul rest in peace and his memory be eternal.
