San Antonio, Texas East Side Corridor Economic Development
Home The Issue Basic Demographics Infrastructure Improvements Land Use About Resources Conclusion
This project is a study of the economic development in the East Side Corridor of San Antonio, TX as it relates to the at&t center and its construction in 2003. San Antonio is located in Bexar county in South Texas. The studied corridor is located at the heart of San Antonio, north-east of downtown.
Boundaries:
The northern boundary for this corridor is I-35
The southern boundary is I-10
The western boundary is highway 281
The eastern boundary is I-410.
Planning Studies:
There were three main studies concerning the economic impacts and potential for improvements following the construction of the at&t Center. The first, East Corridor Multi-Modal Alternatives Plan, was an infrastructure study that outlined the street improvements needed to make the area around the at&t Center more accessible to both pedestrians and motor vehicles; this study was done by the Metropolitan Planning Organization. The second, Arena District/East Side Community Plan, was a comprehensive study completed by the Economic Revitilization Agency, which proposed broad changes to the East Side Corridor. The third, Retail Market Analyses, was a survey of local retail establishments which was conducted by UTSA's Center for Economic Development.
Each of the reports includes both general and specific proposals which ultimately projected the revitalization of the East Side Corridor of San Antonio. Five years after the arena was built, we are observing the actual changes against the proposed changes. The goal of our study is to answer the questions:
1) Did the at&t Center fail to spur the economic growth projected by the City?
-A look at both existing and new building permits
-Maps of both projected land use and actual zoning
2) Is there a lack of infrastructure that inhibited this growth?
-Comparison of proposed infrastructure improvements, and actual observed improvements
Below are three illustrations of the studied corridor.
The study corridor, named "East Side Corridor" and located in San Antonio, TX, is enclosed by I-410, I-35, I-37/281, and I-10, as indicated in the above map. It is centrally located in Bexar County north east of downtown San Antonio.
