Robot # 34
Welcome to Sadie Scheffer's 2.007 2008 website!ROBOT 34 is a vicious fighting machine! as can be seen in his decor... Naturally all the other robots are afraid of him! He enjoys eating food balls and plucking up noodle trees from the forest, usually from the second level. Robot # 34 was inspired by a working cardboard model, and by one of Sadie's favorite applications of four-bar linkages, a walking sculpture by the Dutch artist Theo Jansen... (the last piece shown in the linked video). Here is a still of it, but I recommend the moving image!
In order to fit into the 16"x16"x24" starting box, both the door-opening hand and the noodle-grabbing claw must be folded down and spring loaded. While building this machine, I came across several obstacles, such as an unwanted side-to-side motion in my linkages. I learned that if I reamed the holes in my wooden arms and used the same sized shoulder-bolt, the whole structure would become more stable. I learned a lot of quick and cheap methods of strengthening a structure, with the help of Mr. Dick Fenner, that helped my robot immensely! (Thanks!) Just as importantly to me, I saw so many different mechanisms being built! It was great to have exposure to so many different machines, and great to be on a design team with some of them. Their websites will be linked on the DOCUMENTS AND STUFF page! Please enjoy browsing this website! |
