1855 Belfast -
November 1855 Great Great Grandparents Denis Rush & Rose Connolly got married in St Patricks Church, witnessed by Rose's Parents John & Mary Anne Connolly from Co Monaghan Family Documents
1860 Belfast –
They also had two daughters, Ellen born1858 & Ann born 14Nov 1865 In the Business Directory of the time Great Great Grandfather Denis occupation is listed as a Cab / Car Proprietor and they are living in 25 English Street. History 1870 Belfast – Great Great Grandfather Denis & Rose are living in 24 Millford Street.1876 Belfast -
Great Great Grandfather Denis died on the 13 June 1876 in 22 Albert Street age 45/50
Sad to say he lies in a unmarked grave in Milltown Cemetery, the grave was purchased by his daughter Ellen (Rush) Clarke and there were 8 burials between 1876 - 1907
1877 Belfast - In the Business Directory of the time Great Great Grandmother Rose occupation is listed as a Cab / Car Proprietor and she is living in 22 Albert Street.Other known addresses: 4 Canada Street History
1880 Belfast -
Once again we find Great Great Granny Rose back in English Street (No7) In the Business Directory of the time she is listed as a Grocer.
Point of interest: 31 years on in 1911 at the age of 77yrs Great Great Granny Rose is back in English Street, this time No 20, she is living with her daughter Ellen (Rush) McKenna. (2nd marrage)
1883 Belfast - Great Grandfather Frank aged 23, marries Catherine Greenwood and they had the following Children:Denis – 1883 Francis Henry – 1886 Jane (Quigley) – 1888 Rose Ann (Curry) – 1892 Mary (Quinn) – 1895 Catherine (Hall) - 1897 1892 Belfast – In the Business Directory of the time Great Grandfather Franks occupation is listed as a Cab / Car Proprietor and they are living in 6 Osman Street.Other known addresses are: 34 English Street, 19 Sultan Street. 11 Milan Street. 1 Lower Urney Street. 1897 Belfast -
Great Grandfather Frank died on the 18 January 1897 aged 35 at 11 Milan Street and is buried in Milltown Cemetery.
1898 Belfast – Great Grandmother Catherine marries Robert Hunt and they have one childMargaret – 1899 1900 Belfast – JJ Greenwood who’s occupation is listed as a Cab / Car Proprietor is living in 2/4 Ross Street.
For some time now Seamus Hall has asked me to see if I could find a connection between the Rush’s & the Greenwoods. I have found out the following:
JJ Greenwood is the brother of Catherine Greenwood who married Great Grandfather Frank Rush
The Greenwoods owned a business & land on the Glen Road Belfast and hailed from Gransha Beg (St Tierney Co Monaghan), the business & land were located in the area we know today as Gransha Shops & Housing Estate. RUSH / GREENWOOD
1903 Belfast – Granddad Denis Rush marries Catherine Evans and they have a son Francis (Uncle Francie) – 1908 Catherine Evans died in 1919 Granddad Denis got married again to Margaret McGuigan and they had the following children: Denis, Joe, Kathleen (Steritt), Jim, Bernadett (McGinn) 1907/9 Belfast - Grandfather Denis Rush is living in 26 English Street 1909 Clones – Great Aunt Jane aged 20 marries Edward Quigley in 1910 they have a girl:Cathleen Jane Known Addresses: 10 Glear & Finn Bank Cottage 1910 Belfast - Grandfather Denis Rush moves into 2/4 Ross Street Ross Street - English Street 1911 Census – Great Uncle Francis aged 25 is living in 1 Lower Urney Street with his sisters and half sister Margaret Hunt. Grandfather Denis is married to his first wife Catherine Evans and is Living in 2/4 Ross Street and Great Aunt Jane aged 23, now married to Edward Quigley is living near Clones Co Monaghan. 1914 - 1918 The Great War
Uncle Eddie Postcard from the 1900s This is a photograph of Great Uncle Eddie Quigley who was married to Great Aunt Jane Rush, he would have been 26yrs old when this was taken. Uncle Eddie was a Trooper in the 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers. (Photo kindly donated by Gerardine (McGinn) McQuoid) History 1920 Belfast – Great Uncle Frank aged 34 marries Elizabeth Katherine Healy Falls Road Belfast and immigrates to Canada, they had the following children:Maureen died early 1930s Francis John died 1949 Maureen died early 1930s Dr Desmond died 1973 Dr Teresa died 1979 Great Uncle Frank died 1944 in Spiritwood aged 58 and Katherine died 1983 in White Rock BC aged 93. The Canadian Connection 1922 Belfast - Family legend has it that Robert Hunt (Robbie Hunt) (Great Granny Catherines 2nd husband) while on his way to feed the livestock in Ross Street was shot dead by a sniper from Andrews Flour Mill, we are told that is was the Black & Tans that done the dirty deed. No mention of why he was killed.
1939 - 1945 World War Two
Francis John Rush who died in 1949 at the age of 27 in a flying accident, Northern Manitoba Canada, 21 August 1949 was a veteran of World War Two and was awarded the DFC & Bar, he was a pilot with 502 (Ulster) Squadron flying out of Aldergrove Antrim Northern Ireland. History
Leading Fireman Denis Rush (Dad) - Served with the Auxiliary Fire Service 4th July 1941 to 31st March 1942 and the National Fire Service 1st April 1942 to 31st March 1946. Family Documents
1941 Clontibret - Great Grandmother Catherine died in 1941 aged 72yrs in Clontibret Co Monaghan – She had been sent there to stay with her daughter Great Aunt Jane (Rush) Quigley because of the bombing in Belfast during World War 2 - She is buried with Great Grandfather Frank in Milltown Cemetery. Family Documents Post Note: The earliest reference I can find for 2/4 Ross Street is 1880, then it was occupied by a Edward Boylans a Hackle Maker.
