  Senior Corps Week is

September 19-23, 2011

Senior Corps Week, September 19 - 23, 2011, is a time for Senior Corps programs to celebrate the important impact more than 450,000 volunteers have on our nation. During this special week we recognize not just the durability and effectiveness of Senior Corps’ legacy – but also the unique ability that Americans 55 and over possess to use their wisdom, professional skills, and experience to cultivate and nurture the kind of change that makes a lasting generational impact.  For information on becoming a volunteer, please call Rene Walker at 704-817-5465.

Do you have a Sweet Spot for our Heroes?

Help say thanks to our local police officers for all that they do!  September 1-16, RSVP will be collecting sweet (and salty) snacks for our local officers as a way of saying thanks.  Donation boxes are located at the Tyvola, Shamrock, and North Meck Senior Centers and a card will also be available for everyone to sign at each location.

Thanks for helping RSVP recognize our local officers!

If a disaster were to hit Charlotte many of us know someone who might need assistance either getting out of town or with transportation. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Council on Aging has created a Senior Disaster Registry, a database of seniors who might need assistance in the event of an emergency. This database is then shared with responders in the event of a disaster. RSVP volunteers have helped to enter in data into the Senior Disaster Registry and update the files, however, our biggest problem is awareness about the registry to the general public. RSVP and the Council on Aging is hosting a training for community members who would like to become Senior Disaster Registry Ambassadors. SDR Ambassadors will provide information and training on what the senior disaster registry is and how people can registry. The goal is for ambassadors to then share this information with their friends, churches, civic groups, and clubs. These efforts in the community will help increase awareness for the Senior Disaster Registry.  The scheduled date for the training is Tuesday, September 28th from 10am-12pm at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Council on Aging (3700 Shamrock Drive). If you are interested in participated please call Sarah Jackson at 704-817-5465. She can provide you more details about the training. Below is a flyer about the Senior Disaster Registry.

If you would like to register to be on the Senior Disaster Registry please complete the registration form, which can be found at the bottom of this page or by clicking here. Please print out the form, complete and and return it to the address listed for Council on Aging on the form. and mail it to the Council on Aging (address is provided on the form). If you have any questions about the form you may call Coucil on Aging at 704-391-5216.
