Scull: an oar, a racing shell, or [verb] to propel using sculls

Monmouth Boat Club was founded in 1879 for rowing and the enjoyment of the Navesink River. The story goes founder Dr. Field wished to enter a rowing regatta on the Schuykill River, Philadelphia, but discovered that he was ineligible except as a member of a rowing club. The solution for Dr. Field was to form MBC. The current Rowing Fleet continues the tradition with mostly early morning excursions to the Oceanic Bridge, and beyond, from early Spring to late fall. A Solstice race is one of the season highlights. If you are interested in rowing with us, contact Jim and get on his fleet email. (732) 530-3388, jimshelton@comcast.net.

Rowers at Monmouth Boat Club proposed forming a fleet in 2000, established a charter in 2001, and joined the national organization, US Rowing, in 2002. In 2008, the Rowing Fleet expanded to include kayakers.

The Navesink River is wonderful for rowing. We row most often in good weather when winds are low – typically early mornings and sometimes early evenings. Our races are held every other week as shown on the MBC Calendar for June through September. (Rowing races are the ones with AM start times.) See the race course rules and an aerial photo of the Navesink River, and also rowing race results.

Photos, taken mostly at Summer Solstice races, are beautiful to browse.

Learning to row is possible at almost any age after childhood. It is great exercise and lets you to enjoy the river, from the parkway to the inlet, at your own pace. Many of us learned to row with Navesink River Rowing (NRR). This non-profit organization offers lessons in June, July, and early August for adults and for youth 14 to 18 years old. Contact NRR at nrrnews@gmail.com.
