Middle States Campus Tennis League Rules
- The time will take place at whatever time both Captains agree on, unless otherwise specified.
- If it’s more convenient to play a match at another day, time, or location, both Captains can agree to do so.
- Captains are responsible for securing their courts for home matches.
- Home teams are responsible for providing balls for the match.
- Team Match Format
- For the Tier 1 Section League, each team match is 2 individual matches each of male singles, female singles, male doubles, female doubles, and 1 match of mixed doubles. This is a total of 9 individual matches. The team that wins 5 individual matches wins the match.
- For the Tier 2 District Leagues, each team match is 1 individual match each of male singles, female singles, male doubles, female doubles, and mixed doubles. This is a total of 5 individual matches. The team that wins the most amount of games win the match. If there is a tie at the end, the Mixed Doubles team will play a 10-point Super Tiebreaker for the match. WTT based Overtime will also be in effect, so that if the losing team wins the Mixed Doubles, they keep playing until the winning team wins a game or a Tiebreaker is forced.
- One player can play in 2 individual matches, but no more than that.
- In the Section League you need at least 4 men and 4 women to play a match without defaulting one. You can bring as many as 7 men and 7 women.
- In the District League, you need at least 2 men and 2 women to play a match without defaulting one. You can bring as many as 4 men and 4 women.
- Teams can change their lineup up until the individual match is played. Once play has begun, there may be no substitution.
- Individual Match Format
- For the Tier 1 Section League, the choice of individual match format will be left up to the Captains. You may play best 2 out of 3 sets, an 8 game pro-set or a 10 game pro-set. If you end up going inside due to rain, you may shorten it to a 6 game set. The choice of using ad or no-ad scoring will also be left up to the Captains.
- For the Tier 2 District League, each individual match will be an 8 game pro-set, with a tiebreaker at 8-all. The choice of using ad or no-ad scoring will be left up to the Captains.
- In the event of inclement weather, the home team captain is responsible for making the decision on a match. He or she can:
- Book indoor courts to play the match at a nearby club or indoor university courts. If this is the case, home teams may request that the away teams pay for part of the court costs.
- Reschedule the match for another day and time.
- Note: Matches must be made up by the end of the calendar year. If you do not intend to make up the match, please let the League Coordinators know.
- Captains should communicate with their opposing captain at least 3 days before the match to coordinate details such as directions, number of players, etc.
- Home teams are responsible for reporting scores, although away teams can do so if they choose. It is preferred that you give results of individual matches as well.
- If a team doesn’t have enough players to play the match, the captain can request from their opposing captain to reschedule the match for another time. However, both captains must agree. If the opposing captain says they cannot do this, then the match goes on as scheduled with the remaining players.
- Section League Example: John is Team A’s Captain, and Joe is Team B’s Captain. John only has 3 men and 3 women to play against Team B, who has 4 men and 4 women to play, so he requests to reschedule the match. Joe’s players are not available at any other time, and cannot due so. Therefore, Team A plays Team B with 3 men and 3 women, defaulting 2 courts (doubles).
- District League Example: John is Team A’s Captain, and Joe is Team B’s Captain. John only has 3 men and 1 woman to play against Team B, who has 4 men and 4 women to play, so he requests to reschedule the match. Joe’s players are not available at any other time, and cannot due so. Therefore, Team A plays Team B with 3 men and 1 women, defaulting 1 courts (women’s doubles).
- Also, If a team has enough guys, but not enough girls, then the teams could play the guys portion the day planned, but reschedule the girls later on, but the team that didn’t have enough would forfeit the mixed doubles. For example, Team A has enough guys to play Team B but not enough girls. Instead of rescheduling the match, they play just the guys portion of the match. Team A would forfeit the mixed doubles match as a penalty. That way if Team B swept the guys, they would mathematically win the match and the girls portion wouldn’t have to be rescheduled, otherwise they would reschedule the girls match for a later date.
- If the match is somewhat far and a team requests lodging with the opposing team, the opposing team is advised but not required to do so.
- In the Section and Philadelphia District League teams have been scheduled for 5 matches. In order to win the league, a team must play at least 4 of these matches. In the Allegheny Mountain/Central Penn and New Jersey/Eastern Penn District Leagues, teams have been scheduled for 4 matches. In order to win these leagues, a team must play in at least 3 of these matches. The only excuse for not playing a match will be inclement weather as teams should book court time and travel in advance. If there is a disagreement, you may appeal to the League Coordinator, and they will make a decision, which may be a defaulted match for one team or the other.
- Standings are based on your team’s number of League Wins. Thus, if one team is 4-0 at the end (cancelled match due to inclement weather), and another is 4-1, there is a tie and it will go to a tiebreaker.
- If there is a 2- way tie at the end of the season, the tiebreaker will be the head to head record for that season. If there is no head to head record, it will be based on individual matches won in the Section League, and individual games won in the District Leagues.
- If there is a 3 or 4-way tie at the end of the season, we will take the top two teams with the most individual matches won and proceed to the 2-way tie.
