RH1 Kestral RH1 history
An order for an iveco 49-10 coach seated 21 seater midibus was made by the "Rising Star team" headed by a selkent district director for the purpose of a bus for route test/publicity vehicle and a visual aid for the purpose of a tender proposal for an application to LRT for the Orpington Small bus network due to commence in August 1986.
Completed at the Robin Hood Racing powerboat factory near Southampton in April 1986, in a maroon and grey livery with large Roundabout vinyls was built in a very short space of time, and a week or so later, RH1 with the pet name "Kestrel" attended Brighton bus and coach rally winning an award for small bus status.
Throughout these intial weeks, RH1 was cruical in the success of the rising star team bid to tender for the small
Bus network.
RH1 was driven by Bryan Constable who headed up the team, to 55 Broadway to show LT chiefs, complimented with historical aspects with metal OB stencil garage codes and L6 on the blind. Initially the network was L for local but subsequently changed to R.
Although the bus was ordered and built, perhaps on a darish whim, back then LRT were impressed with what they saw and duly gave Orpington Buses Ltd (part of selkent) t/a Roundabout the green light as winner of the bid. A further 23 iveco Dailys with Robin Hood bodywork were ordered and built in time for the august 1986 contract start date for Routes R1-R6.
Before the summer start date of the route, RH1 paved the streets of Orpington with her bright friendly little charm on meet and greet and general advertising to the public of the new Roundabout midibus concept, bringing a bus service to the back roads and communities of urban and rural
Orpington.
RH1 was used on the official publicity photograph beside the semiphore signal bus terminal at Orpington station.
On the first day of the new routes, sat 16th august 1986, RH1 was operated on route R1, and it is believed she worked the very 1st journey - sadly no records exist which bus did perform the inauguaral Roundbout journey, though one keen passenger account was that the 1st journey was operated by a coach seated RH- there were 3 built. RH1, 23, 24.
RH24 was used on the inaugural
R5, so it's either RH1 or RH23. |

~ | 7/90 OB into service on Orpington's Roundabout routes. 9/94 OB privatised to Stagecoach Selkent 11/95 TL Transfer to Catford Garage DT39 was the 1st of the DTs to leave OB, she left in November 1995 a few weeks before OB closed down, and was moved to TL for driver cab familiarisation. By December she was reunited with her sisters who came over to TL. DT39 worked routes 124, 273 and P4. 12/97 Stagecoach Selkent 3/98 Transfer to Red & White 7/00 Red & White 8/02 sold to Stafford Bus Centre 8/02 bought by Tilley, Cornwall 3/03 bought by Emsworth & District 4/07 in service, Emsworth & District 02/11 bought by T Gurney, Orpington. DT39 (G39 TGW) was repatriated on Friday 21st January 2011 to Orpington, in the green and cream livery of Emsworth & District, after seeing out her psv days on a number of Hampshire rural routes. Work started immediately to restore her to her original Roundabout condition, red with grey skirt, as delivered in 1991. When "Roundabout" ceased in 1995, DT39 was transferred to Catford for routes 124 / 273 / P4. In 1998, Stagecoach sent DT39 to its "Red & White" operation in Wales until 2002. After a short spell on the Stafford Bus Centre sales list, DT39 was bought by Tilley's Coaches in Bude, Cornwall, and worked private hires for six months until early 2003. Emsworth & District then operated DT39 until its last day in service on route 27 Southbourne – Rowlands Castle during December 2010.

Warwickshire sold (together with FM7) to APL Travel, Flimwell (routes in wooten bassett) circa late 1998/early 1999. livery was white, with marron skirt and maroon roof.
sold to Ross's Minibuses, Struy, Inverness in early/mid 2001. livery was white with light blue skirt and roof.
in 12/2005, it is believed FM1 suffered a front end accident (he rlast tickets in the ticket bin showed Christmas eve date). she was parked up in the yard and decomissioned.
in 02/2010 Tom Gurney was researching his book about Roundabout and telephoned Willy Ross of Ross's Minibuses, and willy agreed the sale of FM1 to Tom.
FM1 was picked up at 5pm and travelled over on the back of an 18Tonne lowloader some 615 miles through the night of the 10th August arriving at her new home in Kent at 1125 on the 11th August 2010. where she has now been wokred on in preservation.
Just in time for the book launch of "Roundabout: Orpington's Little Buses" on 15th August.
A few weeks later her engine was up and running and FM1 was moved to undercover storage at a new home (in Kent). During the winter of 2010, welding in the engine bay began, notable a new battery tray, and a brand new battery was fitted.
In February 2011, great progress was made, and FM1 has working foot brakes and throttle making her much more roadworthy.
In March, work began on sanding down her several coats of paint and prima, by non other than the original Roundbaout repsrayer! |
