My
name is Joe Fillingham. I have worked as a professional sailing
instructor at the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center for nearly a decade. During this time I have graduated from high school, earned a
Bachelor's degree at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, and a Master's degree at UW Milwaukee in Atmospheric Science
and Physical Limnology. While completing my Masters, I work as a research
assistant at the Great Lakes Water Institute and a teaching assistant in the atmospheric sciences department. After being selected as a 2011 John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellow, I am working as a Program Analyst out of Silver Spring, MD for NOAA's office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. After completing the 12 month fellowship, I intend to return to Milwaukee and complete a Ph.D in Freshwater Sciences at UW Milwaukee. I
hold a US Sailing Level One small boat teaching certification, and an
ISAF Level 2 rating*. Through the 2009 and 2010 seasons I was the crew boss
for Snow Goose Racing, a one boat campaign on a Tripp 37 out of South Shore Yacht Club, Milwaukee, WI.
In my spare time I raced with the soling fleet out of the Milwaukee
Yacht Club, and plan to compete in the local 470 series. Currently, I am competing on a J35 with T-Bone Sailing out of Annapolis, MD . I aspire to compete at the international level in one design fleets, long distance ocean racing, and in the Great Lakes short handed series. Although professional sailing has always been a dream of mine and is not out of the question, I am currently pursuing a career in my field of research. * ISAF has recently changed the sailor rating criteria Current US Sailing Member Education: MS Atmospheric Science / Mathematics University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Great Lakes Water Institute Degree in Progress BS Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences University of Wisconsin Madison Degree Received May 2007 Professional Experience: Research Assistant, Technician, & RV Boat Operator Milwaukee, WI Sailing Instructor, Dock Master, Regatta ChairGreat Lakes Water Institute May 2008 to Present Milwaukee, WI Boat Safety CertificationMilwaukee Community Sailing Center May 2002 to Present Milwaukee, WI Wisconsin DNR June 2008 Madison, WI US Sailing Level One Instructor CertificationHoofers Sailing Club August 2006 to May 2007 Milwaukee, WI Milwaukee Community Sailing Center June 2004 Boat Deliveries Queen's Cup Delivery 2010 Grand Haven, MI to Milwaukee, WI Port Washington Delivery 2009 Milwaukee, WI to Port Washington WI Port Washington, WI to Milwaukee, WI Muskegon, MI to Milwaukee, WI Chicago NOOD Regatta Delivery 2009Milwaukee, WI to Chicago, IL Queen's Cup Delivery 2008Grand Haven, MI to Milwaukee, WI Boat Delivery, September 2007 Milwaukee, WI to Port Washington, WI Clipper Cup Delivery 2007Milwaukee, WI to Muskegon, MI Queen's Cup Delivery 2007Muskegon, WI to Milwaukee, WI Queen's Cup Delivery 2005Muskegon, MI to Milwaukee, WI Queen's Cup Delivery 2004Grand Haven, MI to Milwaukee, WI Boat Positions: Trimmer
