Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University – RCW Research Team

Field Coordinator. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, NC. Responsible for monitoring and managing the population of Red-cockaded woodpecker on the installation, conducting research, and assisting graduate students and faculty with their own research.  Currently working with the Defense Coastal/Estuarine Research Program to determine the effects of RCW management on the entire avian community, investigating the avian cavity-nesting community, assisting with an investigation of the interactions between heart-rot fungus and RCW, and designing a project to investigate nest predation of avian cavity-nesters, especially RCW. Responsible for research to determine the predominant habitat factors structuring amphibian and reptile communities on Arkansas Post National Memorial.  Duties include project design, plot setup, area constrained species searches, identification of specimens, habitat data collection, analyzing data, writing reports, presenting results, hiring, training, and managing 4+ field technicians and volunteers. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University – RCW Research Team

Wildlife Technician. Eglin Air Force Base, FL.  Responsible for study plot setup and data collection for cavity nesting bird study.  Duties include cavity nest searches, monitoring RCW cavity use, monitoring cavity nest success, cavity maintenance, vegetation surveys, data entry, driving 4x4 vehicles, using tree-top peeper video systems, and coordination with Department of Defense personnel.  Also involved in banding RCW and American kestrel nestlings was well as monitoring Florida bog frog populations. Responsible for project setup and data collection in the field and laboratory for graduate student projects.  Duties include insect surveys, specimen collection, fire ant colony relocation, trichome assessment, creation and maintenance of insect colonies, growing plants for study and insect food sources, flash freezing of samples, and data entry. Involved with wood stork recovery efforts in South Carolina that include banding chicks, managing foraging ponds, and monitoring wading bird pond usage.  Also responsible for sanctuary operation and maintenance.  Duties included bobwhite quail surveys, breeding bird censuses, monitoring wood duck box usage, prescribed burns, bench fabrication, building maintenance, and grounds upkeep.
