Rosedale History

Rosedale History Project

People's memories of earlier times at Rosedale are gradually being collected. In this section you will find links to their unedited reminiscences.

We encourage contributions. If in longhand or an oral account on cassette tape then post to The Rosedale Association, PO Box 4134, Manuka, ACT 2603. Emails with or without word processor or photographic attachments can be sent to the History Coordinator .

The Cabins

In 1930 the first of three log cabins was constructed on the Rosedale foreshore. In 1942 the other two were constructed.

The architectural firm andrewmetcalfarchitecture of Canberra has prepared a Statement of Heritage Impact (SOHI) in support of a Development Application on the foreshore cabins. The statement contains historical and social background material that gives an outline of the early history of Rosedale from the second half of the 19th century to the time of the 1939 bushfire. Events leading up to the building of the cabins, and after, are described, as well as the fish drawings and a history of the Knowlman family.

The SOHI was prepared by Drew Heath, architect of andrewmetcalfarchitecture who with Andrew Metcalf have kindly given permission for it to be reprouced on this website.

For convenience links to the references in the SOHI which contain some wider historical information are given below:

Alan and Paul Tooker's parents first saw Rosedale in 1962 and were so captivated by it that that they decided to buy a plot of land and build a holiday house there. Alan writes to us from London with his and his younger brother Paul's teenage memories of many happy holidays between 1964 and 1968. They left Australia when their father was appointed to the United Nations, Geneva. Alan says that he enjoys keeping abreast of the developments in the Rosedale community and has made two brief visits to Rosedale when holidaying in Australia.
