This web site contains a variety of pages dealing with a variety of topics. It is being compiled by me, Patrick Roper, who lives at South View on the outskirts of the village of Sedlescombe in East Sussex, UK.
I called it 'Roper's Miscellany' because I am Roper and it will be a miscellany. On Googling the phrase I discovered, somewhat surprisingly, that Roper's Miscellany was an imaginary magazine that featured in a novel called Isabel Clarendon (1885) by Victorian author George Gissing. After 124 years it is achieving some sort of virtual reality. I wonder what Gissing would think.
Here are a couple of quotes from his novel:
"That story of yours in Roper's Miscellany is one of the most delightful things I have read for a long time."
"Her father is a literary man, the editor of a magazine called Roper's Miscellany - do you know it? He and I are the best of old friends." |
