The Conficker Worm

 (Advice for everyone)

No security suite can cover every possible threat, but I cannot stress enough that it is CRITICALLY IMPORTANT to have a full security suite protecting your computer than none at all.  You will need more than just Anti Virus.

Make sure you have the following:
  • Anti Virus
  • Anti Malware / Anti Spyware
  • Computer Firewall (Windows has a built-in firewall, but some viruses can turn this off if you are not protected)
  • AntiSpam (not as critical, but if you receive high levels of email from sources you do not know, you should use one)
  • Links to websites can and are passed to you in Instant Message windows.  Some security packages secure your Yahoo and MSN instant message windows as well.  Be aware of instant message windows from people you do not know.  If you get such a window, either click on the red [X] to exit the window, or if your instant messenger has an "ignore" or "block" feature, use it.  It will prevent conversations from the same source in the future.
  • Make sure that you download all of your Microsoft Windows updates as well as get the updates to your Computer Security package.
  • It is best to have one single package that covers all of these, rather than have to rely on several individual packages.  Check first with the company that supplies your internet service if you do not currently have a security package.  Bresnan customers already have a full security suite available to them (click here), where QWEST customers do not.
  • Your computer may have been sold to you with an anti-virus program already installed.  Typically, this protection is a trial program, and will only have 2 - 3 months of coverage from the date of purchase.  If you have had your computer for longer than this, and have not updated or replaced your anti virus, you are not covered.
  • DO NOT just download any internet-based pop-up screen that claims to be antivirus.  Many ads are actually viruses and trojan progams in disguise. Examples are Antivirus 360, Antivirus 2009.  DO NOT ACCEPT THESE ads as real protection.
  • If you do choose to download a known brand of computer security from the internet, be aware that the 'Free' or Trial version WILL NOT protect you as well as a fully-paid-for version.  You will be better off to buy a security protection suite from your local computer reseller store, such as Staples, Office Max, Walmart, and Sam's Club, than to take your chances with a quick download from the internet.
