dream rooms
Raum in German means space or room. Traum in German means dream. This image feels like an enclosed space like a sarcophagus, an Egyptian tomb, a flotation tank, a tomb or cave. There is Light. The word “raumshiff” in German means spaceship. This image reminds me of) viewing a television image (while living in Berlin) –a report of a cult, in New Mexico (Land of Enchantment, weird Los Alamos-type sci-fi) that believed they were going to go on an astral trip. www.cnn.com/US/9803/25/heavens.gate/ . Each one bought new black Nikes for the trip because they were going to walk a lot. The television image of 5 or 6 bodies laid out on beds in a dark curtained room, sheets covering them and black Nikes sticking out was fascinating. Heaven’s Gate was the name of the cult. They ate their favorite last meal, helped poison each other and prepared to travel into the Eternal Cosmos-this was in connection with the Hale-Bopp comet.
No body left behind. This is a series of images, each one with subtle differences. They could be the same “room” or different rooms, depending on changing atmospheric or light conditions, or perspective. The viewer interprets the image by “feeling” it: The question- what it is, is secondary but gives the image its secretive or mysterious quality. We initially respond to basic elements like color and shape because light makes them identifiable (bringing everything out into the Light so to speak). We then process the image as information we already know, recognizable or unfamiliar. But without Light we would literally be in the dark. Light forms our perception; rationally or emotionally. Outside the window is Light – Life. We can imagine the wind blowing, trees moving. We can "feel" emotionally. From our perspective, we are on the inside, looking out (the window). Or are we looking in? Inside is dark- the unknown; what is real, what isn’t? The window reflection is not real. But what is inside (our minds?) What is (in) this dark space?
There is a reflection; a double image; one is real, the one below, isn’t –a distorted beautiful dream-like phantom, a mirror, an illusion. The white light may be a cloud/air coming in or vapors moving out; a ghost-like ethereal presence; what is real, what isn’t. We can use photography to record real objects and manipulate them-take them out of context or, juxtapose different elements to create a new meaning (in our minds). The viewer brings into the experience his personal subjective information and emotion –what he knows. What is unsettling is what he doesn’t know.
